Says alcoholics are a protected class and is asking for $30 million in damages.

Google it yourself.

Just saw that.

He's officially torpedoed any chance he had left at a coaching career. I thought if he got sober he could possibly salvage his career at a FCS school or a lower tier FBS school, but no chance of that now.

ETA - I won't say he has no chance of winning, but I'd bet USC began documenting his transgressions with alcohol (e.g. allegedly drunk during games, missing practices, etc) after the Salute To Troy event and prior to cutting him loose. Of course, this is Pat Haden we're talking about, so anything is possible.

I'm pretty sure the only way he can win is if he says he was impaired when he signed his contract.

His history, going back to his Huskies' days, should make for interesting depositions. Once he opens the door to his behavior/past he's asking for a good reaming. Mite also learn some interesting tidbits about how Hayden handled this, too.

I couldnt believe they hired his drunk arse when they did. He's been well known as a drunk for several years.

This has the potential to get real, real ugly, like program crippling for a decade ugly. Which is fricking awesome because I hate USC!

And there goes his career...
Goodbye Sark, you have successfully transitioned from the professional coaching industry to the professional grievance industry.

If you're going to fire someone for being a drunk or drug problems you can't do it on their first transgression. You must encourage them to seek rehabilitation. I thought USC did that though since he was pretty much drunk 24/7.

Well, why not? He is a football coach, after all. In his mind, he has had his run game shut down with the abrupt firing and nobody ringing his phone to make his career a reclamation project. He might as well do what coaches do, drop back and throw the long ball and hope for the best. Maybe he gets a miracle catch, maybe a PI, but either one beats going to your room and sulking. SC will probably give him something to go away and he can either get his life together or not.

It appears that he is not even denying that he is a drunk. Rather, his argument seems to be that USC discriminated against him because he is an alcoholic, i.e. he has a disability.

So I guess in his view drunks are the same as the blind and people in wheelchairs.

Alcoholism can be covered by the American with Didinilities Act but, to date, it's not considered a protected class.

Alcoholism is a disease you catch from an open bottle.

Probably has an excellent chance of winning the case in California. USC has a substance abuse policy. If so, USC in all likelihood violated that policy with an out right dismissal.

I'm leaning this way. He asked for time off, admitting he had a problem, and then was fired. Had they fired him for cause then he might not have a case. Firing him after admitting a problem works against the university.
