Two reasons. One is that Coach Saban thinks it is the optimum time for a week of rest and recovery, and he is a man who believes in structure and consistency. The second is it coincides with his birthday, and he gets to celebrate.
lsu does it because Saban does and they can't help themselves....

Currently, a few SEC teams have a rival from another conference they play annually. (UK, UGA, UF, SC)
I think those are the only ones at present. If you were the SEC commissioner and you [i]HAD[/i] to assign an OOC opponent for the other members, who would you choose? Feel free to select one for ...

Vanderbilt is a distant second behind Alabama, and has been for about 50 years since Steve Sloan was hired as HC there.
#3 would probably be Kentucky because of mutual ties to Coach Bryant. (I haven't yet afforded the same feeling toward A&M, even with the ties between both Bryant and Stallings, ...

As a life-long Alabama fan, the top 2 for me are Tennessee and Auburn (and in that order, despite the intense hatred for little brother). The #3 SEC rival is a function of current events generally, with LSU holding the spot for the majority of the Saban era, but Georgia coming into play since Kirby ...
