I think it's funny how Arkansas fans think since the hired Petrino last time from the NFL, this time they can hire another NFL coach like Gruden or Del Rio.

And there would be State fans that would be thinking the same thing if you were looking for a head coach? Right....

There are always going to be some fans shooting for the moon in coaching searches because they don't follow the sport as closely as others.

I think its funny Bundy is soliciting any advice on coaching search expectations after his predictions during MSU's basketball coaching search.

I set my heights too high. I understand things better now. There is a lot more that goes into coaching searches than people think.

If Long goes after Grobe or Bowden again then we should FIRE him immediately.

Haven't read the whole thread, but don't know why Del Rio would be such a reach for Arky to get. Seems reasonable.

Personally, I don't see why people are so enamored with Del Rio but maybe that's just me.

If we're going to go the NFL route then I would prefer someone with an offensive background first.

Were you thinking 'no way they can hire an NFL coach' before we hired Petrino?

Maybe we can, maybe we can't... it won't be because of a money issue if we can't though.
You never know if you can hire somebody if you don't talk to them.

totally true, but it seems that the entire $ituation has changed drastically from when HDN was around.

I know things didn't work out in the long run for Del Rio in Jacksonville, but I think he is a pretty good coach. Definitely worth Arky pursuing. I understand the offensive side of the ball concern, but he brings a shitload of expertise and intensity to the defensive side. Something that shouldn't be overlooked, especially in the SEC.

Oh I agree that defense is key in the SEC but for a school like Arkansas, in our recruiting area, we are always going to have trouble getting SEC caliber defensive players. Our best years in the SEC have always been fueled by explosive offensives. We just aren't capable of playing LSU/Bama ball which is to grind out the clock and protect the lead with a strong defense. It's just not going to happen unless we get an elite recruiter which is easier said than done.

Based off that I would just rather have an innovative offensive minded coach that understands the need for defense.

While Petrino is and probably always be my favorite head coach at Arkansas, his neglect for defense both in recruiting and practice still blows my mind at times.

Del Rio could definitely coach up the defensive players to a more effective level. Also, with the right offensive coordinator, I think things would work out fine.

Don't underestimate kids on the defensive side of the ball wanting and willing to come play for a former NFL coach. Look at it as Petrino with a twist when it comes to recruiting.

Here is the catch to that though. If we hire the big name defensive coach it helps us to go outside of our area and recruit because it is a big name. If we win consistently then the high caliber offensive players won't want to go anywhere else. Petrino's two biggest on the field faults were his lack of ability to recruit high caliber athletes and not abandoning the willy robinson defense early enough.

Very true. I just get nervous when I think about hiring a defensive minded head coach because I can't think of many outside of Saban that also have a high powered offense to go with it. And I would surmise that Saban's offense has more to do with getting the elite of the elite offensive players at RB/OL and not so much the system itself.

I think it is easier to find a good OC than a good DC. However with that said Greg Roman or bust.

With the right coaching staff that provides a good balance between offense and defense, along with a good recruiting strategy, I don't see why this would be a prob for Arky.

With the Del Rio name, he can get better defensive players. He can take care of that side of the ball. Hiring a strong offensive coordinator that knows how to attack different styles of defenses, I think would put Arky in good shape for the future. This is just my opinion though, an outsider. You guys of course have a much better pulse on your program than I do.
