[quote]1. Look at LSU's last three OCs. Do you think they had full control of the offensive play calling? Does an OC want to be the head of an offense where he can't call his own plays?
This is a double-edged sword. If the offense stinks, nobody blames the coordinator: the offense was terrible in '09, '10, '11, '12, '14 and '15. Nobody blames the new guy for the old problems.
On the flip side? If you become the OC for LSU and turn the offense around, you're going to get serious job offers.

2. The head coach is clearly one 4 loss season away from being fired. Based on recent seasons that could happen next year. Do you want a one year deal?
LSU can pay more for assistants than some coaches can pay for head coaches.
One year at $750k? In a low-tax state like Louisiana? There are probably assistants in California making $250k and getting taxed at a much higher rate.
It's not ideal, but it's not a dire situation, either.

LSU, at the very least, needs to get rid of Ensminger, (why the frick do we have a coach for a position we rarely utilize?) and get a dedicated QB coach

Yep hire the OC that helped Mack Brown run Texas into the ground. Brilliant tDUCK.

frick it, if 2 is better than 1, I say 3 is better than 2. Tri-OCs

It’s incredibly difficult – if not impossible – for an offensive coordinator to have a better season than Gilbert did at Eastern Illinois in 2013. In FCS, no team gained more yards than Eastern Illinois, no team scored more points than Eastern Illinois, and no quarterback threw for more yards than Eastern Illinois quarterback Jimmy Graoppolo.
Let’s start with Garoppolo. The senior connected on 375-of-568 passes for 5,050 yards with 50 touchdowns against nine interceptions (a 168.33 pass efficiency rating) while adding 209 rushing yards and four scores. For his efforts, Garoppolo was named the Walter Payton Award winner as the top player in FCS.
As a unit, Eastern Illinois led FCS by averaging 589.5 yards of total offense per game, placed second nationally with 372.4 passing yards per game and ranked 20th in FCS with 217.1 rushing yards per game. Gilbert’s unit was the only FCS offense to rank among the top five nationally in passing offense and the top 20 nationally in rushing offense.

In 2001, Helton's first season as a full-time coach, the Warriors led the nation in kickoff return yardage and broke the NCAA record for average gain per return (30.3). Under Helton, return specialist Chad Owens tied the NCAA record with two kick returns for a touchdown in a game and also broke the NCAA record for most yards gained on kick return.
In 2005, UM kicker Stephen Gostkowski, now with the NFL's New England Patriots, was responsible for nearly one-third of the team's scoring and was named the Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Year.
The 13-year veteran coached First-Team All-American Athletic Conference selections Blake Annen (TE) and Ralph David Abernathy IV (KR) in 2013. He was also part of a staff that produced the most prolific offensive unit in Cincinnati history. The Bearcats set the school record with 6,137 yards of total offense and led the American Athletic Conference, averaging 472.1 yards per game.

Need to define our identity first. Who are we? Pro style, spread, zone read? It seems to me Miles likes the pro style but those types of QB are getting harder to find. Hire the best spread OC and turn him loose. Would match BH skill set much better

A sober Steve Sarkisian would be a solid pro style OC that can legitimately develop a QB.

That would be weird. He used to be a high school coach here in San Angelo. The school didn't have a lot of talent, so he ended up leaving and has been a far better college coach when he has players to execute what he wants to do. It's hard for me to see that big of a jump to LSU, but what the hell, whatever helps us develop a QB that can at least read a defense and make basic throws.

I say we hire Brady Hoke. We gotta keep the "Bo pain train" running smoothly.

Too close to Bourbon St!
ETA - should we be looking at someone willing to be a geobachelor for one year?

Tom Herman is running that offense. Applewhite would be an awful hire.
