That's debatable, but I'll save that for another time. The really huge names are connected to that job for a reason, though.

Good hire, but Florida could have done better. UF is a better job than Michigan, and is deserving of a coach who has already been a champion head coach at a big program.

There aren't exactly a ton of championship winning coaches looking to get out of their current situation. Stoops was probably the only possibility.

Might not be the spash hire FL was looking for but Mac is a damn fine coach and recruiter and can develop a qb, something gatah hasn't had since Timmy left.

This. We have had no player development since I can't even remember. Did Urban really develop anyone? I'm a little concerned about recruiting, but Muschamp has not recruited our offense at all, so it cannot possibly be worse than now.
With a little offense, we could be contenders. 2012 should have been a NC with a competent offense. This year would have been decent too.

I have to be optimistic if anything because the guy is a QB coach.

I think he's a decent long term hire. But they have to give him time to establish himself at the big boys table and not be quick to pull the plug.

I was thinking when I woke up we'd have more news on this front, perhaps later today if things are going well.

Can't imagine it will take too much longer. Just have to finalize the buyout.

Tell us who is the better available hire? They can't wait to announce a new coach and risk losing all of the recruits. I would take McElwain in a heartbeat at LSU, if Les retired.

He is our guy. We aren't still looking, we are just looking to bring the buyout down a little.

Consider this, he was the OC for 2 national championship teams with a 1st year starting QB on both teams. That is not an easy accomplishment.

The fact that opponents are happy because it will improve us but not scared it will make us into a dominant force is worrisome-- think this might be our Richt-- a nice guy who is good enough to turn Florida around but wont exactly bring us back to the Meyer-Spurrier level. If that's the case its worse than Boom as those guys are impossible to get rid of unless they go all Pelini.

At least we're going to a wide open spread passing attack ala Oklahoma in 2008.

Going back to the spread is basically the only possible wrinkle that could make this a title winning hire.

Or CSU didn't budge on the buyout and this is going to get drawn out a little longer.

If this happens, the whole Big 12 should throw a party because this means Big Game Bob is staying in Norman.

Florida could have hired a better name, but they couldn't have hired a better coach

Mac has always been big on running what works. He prefers a 50-50 balance run pass but he'll stick with one or the other if it's working. Lot of pistol and spread looks with some ace mixed in. Likes to utilize an h-back, the guy just knows offense and understands how to exploit a defense.
