How have CFB coaches who replaced some of the winningest coaches of all time fared?

With The GOAT hanging it up at Bama, it appears that they have hired a solid coach who has won at every stop. If you told Bama nation 8 months ago that Saban would retire at the end of the season and Kalen DeBoer would replace him, 80% of them would've responded with LMAO who??? That said, he's the guy and he can coach. What does history show us when the next up coach replaces some of the winningest coaches in the sport?

This is flawed at best.
For example: O’Brien “lasted” two seasons? he wasn’t fired. He got a job as a head coach in the NFL.

Fair point, but he went 8-4 and 7-5 in 2 years. Was the Penn State fanbase happy with BO as Paterno's replacement?

Les Miles is the GOAT at following tGOAT.

Akers started well at UT post Royal and Holtz was pretty good after Broyles.

“Started well” and “pretty good” are not going to satisfy the fan base that has experienced the Saban dynasty.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is close to DeBoer's future.
Stacked with talent the first year then diminishing as he isn't able to keep it going.

Just like with Miles, where he won with Saban’s recruits despite below average coaching the first couple of years.
Miles was a good recruiter though, and he surrounded himself with good recruiters.
If DeBoer can do this he could keep the 9, 10 win seasons going for a few years. But if they aren’t winning the SEC and playing for titles OFTEN DeBoer will be a letdown

Nebraska has certainly improved since firing Solich.

Fry did not win 232 games at Iowa, he won 143 in 20 seasons. 143–89–6 60.0%
Ferentz has won 196 games in 25 seasons 196-119 62.2%
Any other bad takes?

Dan Devine followers Ara Parseghian at Notre Dame and went 53-16-1 with a natty in '77.

The Big Red will be back on top with Matt Rhule! He was one of the hot up and comers class like Tom Herman, Fuente, Aranda, Taggert and the row the boat guy.
Who knows, maybe DeBoer will exceed expectations.

Most of the retiring coaches you listed were not fielding championship level teams when they departed.
I think the five departures that are somewhat comparable to DeBoer’s situation are Bryant, Spurrier, Saban the 1st time, and Osborne.
Paterno - 25 years removed from his last NC
Edwards - 15 years removed and at program that could not expect to win one by 2000
Bowden, Holtz, Mack - Around 10 years removed
Schembechler never won one, and Fry and Beamer were at programs that shouldn’t expect national titles.

They were fortunate to get anyone to coach after all the adolescent rape

No shite. None of these coach’s got all of their wins at the same school. Fry resuscitated a program that hadn’t had a winning season in over 15 years. His coaching tree includes Barry Alvarez, Bob Stoops, Bill Snyder and Ferentz. He had 14 bowl appearances and 3 trips to the rose bowl. So yes, he was considered a top flight coach at a program that was mediocre. And when Ferentz came in he maintained mediocrity, which is why he’s still there.

NONE of the coaches I listed left shoes to fill as large as Saban’s. All of them had some level of success which made them one of the top coaches in their respective school’s history.
So their replacements were highly anticipated but mostly disappointing.
No one on this list will be held to as high a standard as DeBoer.

I agree. Where it’s most apples to apples we got:
Perkins
Zook
Miles
Solich
1 title between the 4 of them and 2 were busts.
Bama is in arguably the BEST condition a coach could ever dream of walking into. If any program(s) could plug someone in who could simply keep the train rolling it would be Bama and UGA. But the X factor here is that DeBoer takes over in the NIL and portal era, so the playing field is changing.

Would also be useful to see the for the last two seasons under the previous coach

Certainly many of these coaches inherited programs in decline. My point is that when you follow someone who had sustained success and was viewed as a good coach, the anticipation is high and the expectations are high. With that pressure most don’t succeed. DeBoer has more pressure than anyone on that list.

Not to be picky, but that isn’t correct:
83 - 8-4
84 - 5-6
85 - 9-2–1
86 - 10-3
Then it was Bill Curry for 3yrs
