A&M is no more racist than the other SEC schools. You take that however you want.

I've never read that before. Thank you for your original, offtopic contribution to the conversation.

And as far as perception goes...

I still perceive that Arkansas will beat A&M next year.

(for the fourth time in a row)

(regardless of venue)

Yeah, don't think you'll hear much argument against that.

What is unfortunate is that the freaking Corps is something like 2,000 of our 50,000 student body. Yet, there they are, all sitting together on TV for the cameras to film. And there are those 5 male yell leaders.

90% of Aggies (at least current students and recent grads) aren't THAT much different than 90% of our counterparts at other large schools.

If A&M was as weird/gay/whatever you want to call it as it is perceived by those that didn't go there, I'd be willing to bet that none of the Ags posting on this board would have chosen to go there.

Rick Perry was a "Yell Leader".......

'nough said.

To the OP, yes it may help some. We all know as the elder generation dies off the overt racism should become less harder to find.

this is yalls perception issue. if they were a much smaller visual part than some of the racist perception would go away. A change now though wouldn't have much impact until a generation has passed or so.

I know more than a few of my black friends who're on the team are excited to see Sumlin take the helm.

If they're excited to see Sumlin take the helm simply because he's black (And more so than if any "White" coach was hired) then they're racists themselves. Works both ways.

I was going to disagree with this post, but then I thought about it. You're correct. It is 2011; if you are excited about anyone because of their pigmentation, you are at the very best, ignorant.

Over the past couple of decades, A&M has grown even more conservative in outlook, with the Bush Library and Perry in the governor's mansion. That's not going to contribute to an overall perception of inclusiveness and ethnic diversity, but A&M doesn't fit neatly into any category. It is what it is.

Well - let's take at least part of this to the woodshed - the "Bush Library" and this notion that the Bushes are racists towards Arrican Americans - George HW Bush appointed the second African American to the supreme court (Clarence Thomas) and the first African American Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (Colin Powell).

W had Dr. Condoleeza Rice as his campaign advisor for foreign affairs, she became the second AA (and to date, the only female) US National Security Advisor. W also had Colin Powell as the first AA Secretary of State and Dr. Rice as the second (and the second female).

Don't like conservatives or the Bushes if you wish - there's much about them about which reasonable people may disagree - don't be disengenous to get people to agree with you.

You really think that many east Texas honkies are going to a major university?

Most students are from the DFW and Houston metroplexes.

Some like me are coonasses

That response was directed at many of the A&M fans. I live in Houston, and I've been around a ton of good A&M fans. A&M has too many honkies for my liking. JMO.

From the reaction from the Ags that I know, I feel pretty confident that this isn't going to end well for Sumlin.

Funny thing about that would be his hiring and subsequent firing could make the perception even worse. Anyway, frick'em

FWIW, I'm glad it doesn't seem to be a big deal to Sumlin himself. Said something to the effect of "there are more important records to fall," when asked about it.

Liking this guy already--wish him the best.
