LSU Offensive Coordinator Candidates

Really short article but good source.

quote:

LSU did background work on offensive coordinator candidates Thursday, a person with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports.

Hope we didn't just start on Thursday...

quote:

Among those likely to get a look for the LSU job are former Texas offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert, Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Matt Canada and former Oregon coach Mark Helfrich.

First time I've seen Canada officially mentioned. Good stuff.

I'm sorry but I have ZERO interest in Mark Helfrich. Name one QB he's recruited out of HS and developed at Oregon? He hasn't. Relied on 1AA transfers for two consecutive years. That plus his soft scheme would be a disaster here.

Why are you sorry plenty of people (myself included) have brought up these exact points in contention with Helfrich's name.

Hilfrich's schemes are not soft. He uses zone reads both inside and out, counters, traps, lead plays, double teams, and power run plays. Any run play that you can do from a pro offense he has them. Ohio State uses the same run schemes in their offense and they don't seen to have any problems. The deference between the two is to tempo and that can be easily adjusted.

The name Marcus Mariota comes to mind.

Yeah, I'm personally not interested in Helfrich either. Not a fit here IMO or a fit for what O wants going forward.

I'm also tired of hiring "fired" coaches ... Steele, Cameron, Kragthorpe, Crowton (Helfrich would be another). As someone pointed out above, how about let's hire someone that is currently employed. Maybe there's a reason those guys got fired.

A female who claims to be a sports writer was commenting on a Saturday down south Facebook post claiming USA today was not a legit source yesterday, so which is it? Is she just a female who don't know shite or is USA today not legit source material?

I generally agree with this statement, however, Helfrich was fired as an HC, we would want him as an OC, where he was much more successful. Now if absolutely no one else wants him, even as a coordinator, then that's a little fishy.

I used to be ok with it as well (fired HC back to OC), but after Cameron (fired HC back to OC), Crowton (fired HC back to OC), Kragthorpe (fired HC back to OC)... I'm ready to go away from that pattern.

Granted, Krags was a weird one because he never truly became LSU OC, but nonetheless you get my point. Let's get an up-and-coming OC, not a washed up HC that has had success as an OC. Let's get an OC with realistic head coaching aspirations, maybe he'll be more motivated to make our offense go to continue building his resume for a potential step up down the road.

This and I will add I have less intrest in Gilbert. I keep up with Texas and I just don't see his five play offense working in the sec.

There is a difference between hiring a fired coordinator to be a coordinator and hiring a fired HC to be a coordinator. Not everyone is capable of being a HC>

If you look at yesterday's USA lead sports stories linked under this story you see that LK was hired by Houston.
