At DC, Burton hears the names of Tennessee DC Justin Wilcox, whom we told you about earlier on Thursday, and still of Florida DC Teryl Austin, who was thought to be out of the picture but who Burton says is still under consideration. There are also several possible second-tier candidates: South Carolina’s Ellis Johnson, LSU’s John Chavis and former Pittsburgh DC Phil Bennett.

Doesn't sound like he's THAT high on the list?

not many ppl would consider him a top 5 DC.

Don't know what you mean by "not many" but it seems these folks (select defensive coach from drop down) over at Rivals do.

Excerpt:
quote:

1 Jim Heacock Ohio State
2 Jeff Casteel West Virginia Defensive
3 Bud Foster Virginia Tech
4 Kirby Smart Alabama
5 John Chavis LSU
6 Vic Fangio Stanford
7 Mark Stoops Florida State
8 Pete Kwiatkowski Boise State
9 Nick Aliotti Oregon
10 Brent Venables Oklahoma

My guess is that consensus at rivals represents more than "not many" people.

They'd have to pay some serious cheese to get him.

I heard from a TAF source who would know that UT did in fact contact Chavis, and he politely told them "no" in a phone call.

Chavis isn't going anywhere. Georgia offered him $1 million a year last year, and he chose to stay at LSU for less. He likes it here, for many reasons, some surprising, and he would only leave for a head coaching job. And that comes from the closest source there is outside of the man himself.

Why cant people see that he already said no, Ponansky said it other week, why are people still questioning it

Because of what some coaches like the following have said:

quote:

"I'm not going to be the coach at Alabama. I don't know how many times I've got to respond to rumor and innuendo. I have no control over that. I've stated what my intentions are and they haven't changed, so I don't know what the issue is. And I don't know why people keep asking about it. What they talk about over there is their business. But what's happening here is my business and our business, and that's what we're focused on. I don't control what people say. I don't control what people put on dot-com or anything else. So I'm just telling you there's no significance, in my opinion, about this, about me, about any interest that I have in anything other than being the coach here. I'm really tired of having to talk about it. That is absolutely not true."

Getting the Chief was worth the year wait with Malveto.

That's a long term plus.

Now we need that with OC.

So is The Advocate just way late on this, or is Chavis reconsidering after originally telling them no? LINK

No, he used the GA job for leverage and LSU matched GA's offer to stay.

Because as long as there is a possible opening at Michigan, there's a possibility that Miles could leave. If Miles were to leave, there are no guarantees a new coach would keep Chavis.

If the unlikely scenario of Miles leaving for UM were to happen, would Chavis be a HC candidate for the tigers?
