that is true, gill was the person for the job He would have stole some recruits from bama where Chizik won't

I think it is hard to compare the two because Gill did what he did at a mid-major and Chizik was in the Big XII.

Do I like the hire as an AU alum? Meh, not really. Would Gill have been a good hire from a PR standpoint? Probably so. However, I think trying to compare winning at Buffalo with losing at ISU is like comparing apples and oranges.

But opposition to affirmative action is still justified. I'm not really even thinking race on this - Auburn didn't hire a lot of highly qualified white coaches either.

They didn't hire Chizik because he's white. I think they wanted a guy they have a comfort level with. The fact that we all think it's the wrong guy will either teach Auburn a lesson or not.

Gill will be the HC of a major program before the start of the 2010 season, at the latest. Maybe even in the SEC...

We don't know yet whether he's right about the football coach, but HE SEEMS RIGHT about the basketball hiring. They should have hired Capel, who has Oklahoma rolling.

So if Mike Leach wasn't ever considered for the job does that mean Auburn was discriminating against his type of offense?

I thought they should have hired Gil. I thought he deserved a shot and not only at Auburn. The guy won at Buffalo. I thought he would have been a good hire at Syracuse. He obviously knows the area, can recruit the area, and probably would have built a nice program there at Syracuse.

I don't like seeing the race card played though but I do feel like he deserves a chance.

Folks,
Had there not been any history for either, the choice may have been different.

2004 AU 13-0 Guess who the DC was - Gene Chizik
2005 TX 13-0 Guess who the DC was - Gene Chizik

that's what he had on Gill....
there was a comfort factor for the AD

I think it's a bad hire. Racism?

I think Barkley is really funny, but if Shaq was dissing the Tigers on national TV, I'd be unhappy with him.

Chizik was not a bad hire at all, I don't think would have been a bad hire either though.

The main reason's for Chizik's hire were the DC jobs he did at AU and UT before going to a horrible program at ISU and trying to completely rebuild that program. ( Hard to do in 2 years )

Most of the really good coaches come from the DC background and that was the direct link to this hire along with knowledge of the school and the SEC for recruiting... Only time will tell if AU made the right choice.

He has the right to be upset...Was the reason Gill wasn't picked because of his race or the race of his wife as it has been reported??? Only the AU powers can answer that. But I think they missed out by not picking Gill...He will make someone a great coach.

He did not have to completely rebuild ISU. They had went to bowl games 5 times in 7 years when he got there

I give props to the ole bread truck but he whines about everything being race related. He should keep his mouth shut and support Auburn. Carlos Rogers stated Chizik is a great pick for the job. At least he played football at AU.

I completely disagree. Everyone has the right to make all of the stupid hires they want.

Charles Barkley has a racist agenda. He is right in the Gill is the better coach. But, he isn't looking at all of the facts. Tubby>Gill>Chizek. Auburn wants someone they can control. Gill would have really hurt his career in coming there at this time when Bama and the rest of the SEC is so strong and they are in a downward spiral.

Charles used this opportunity to push his agenda and now it is becoming obvious. Gill will move to a good school and it will be much better for his career than Auburn. Charles quit whining and playing the race card so much.
