If I were an AU fan I would be upset, but not for the same racist reason Barkley is.

Isn't this a built in flaw with the racial regulations NCAA teams must follow these days? I would not want to be a token interview either. It's insulting to the black candidates they're trying to help.

I get annoyed when people play the race card...however, in this situation, I think he is right.
There is NO way anyone can objectively look at Gill vs Chizik and not see Gill has been a better head coach than Chizik.
AU is going to regret this hire. I'm betting he doesn't last two years at AU.

Charles does not care about which coach is hired, so long as he is BLACK.
I do not think they hired well, but not a color issue.

I agree. IMO, Gill>Chizik. Barkley does have a racist agenda, but he has a piont to.
One of the guys on the radio here in ATL who is an AU grad and privvy to inside info at AU said that, unfortunately, race did in fact play a part in Gill not getting the job. He also said Mike Leach was never seriously considered for the job.
Sounds about right considering their recent moves. Get rid of a good coach in Tubby and then hire Chizik? Sounds to me like they just want a coach they can control and that won't talk back. Doubt they would get that with Gill or Leach.

There are not NCAA regulations regarding hiring of minority candidates. That's an NFL rule, not a NCAA rule.

My mistake. If that is the case, this idea of a token interview is a little silly. What advantage does Auburn get by giving a 'token' interview to a highly heralded coach? Gill's name has been thrown around a lot, and I'm sure he'll get a job at a higher profile school soon.
I honestly had no idea what color he or his wife was until I read this thread FWIW.

Barkley's theory makes as much sense as AU hiring Chizik.

Just my opinion....
have no prove..
Tubby fired his assistant O C only after a few weeks...yet kept the same O
IMO, he saw the handwriting on the wall and attempted to divert his firing by passing the blame on down and showing that he had taken action in firing his OC
Obviously it did not work.

wow, I feel old. I'm actually reading posts of people who were not alive during the 1980s.

As an Auburn alumni, he should be livid.
How about we put this in perspective. Lets pretend Saban never left for the NFL and continued to coach at LSU. This season LSU has a bad season and the Saban is forced out after almost 10 years at the helm. Then LSU hires a coach that was 5-19 at Iowa State. How would you feel?
Edit: Btw this is the type of hire that makes me question my opposition to affirmative action.

I think he is perfectly right for the reason you stated, but Barkley has a "color" agenda mixed in with such as well.
kinda like the old saying...
he has 2 reasons for doing anything...
a good reason and the real reason.

I was alive back then, but not really following football that closely. He was a little before my time.

Ditto. I honestly think that Gill was the best hire but Chizick was hired over quite a bit of better options. Not just the black guy.

He was hired because of the 2004 season as DC at Auburn and 2005 DC at Texas...both years he went 13-0.
HC is a different animal...only time will tell.

Race was absolutely THE issue. AU was stupid because with Saban owning Alabama hearts and minds, they needed to make a statment. They didn't. Unfortuantley, the Nolan Richardson legacy lives in the SEC - Black Coach, White wife. Except Nolan had a bad attitute --

LAFAYETTE, La. -- The first black head football coach at any major Louisiana university has won a $2 million judgment in a lawsuit claiming that the University of Louisiana at Lafayette fired him because of his race, not because his teams lost 80 percent of their games.
Jurors found that Jerry Baldwin's race wasn't the only reason he lost the job, but was among the reasons. University officials broke his contract and inflicted emotional distress through negligence, according to the jury of six whites and six blacks.
Jurors took nearly 10 hours to work their way through a complicated verdict form.
"There is no substitute for victory," said Baldwin's attorney, G. Karl Bernard. He said Baldwin appreciates the chance to air his grievances.
ULL attorney Steve Oats said the evidence doesn't support the verdict for Baldwin, who was coach from 1999-2001, but he and university officials haven't decided their next step.
"It is clear Jerry Baldwin was not terminated because of his race," Oats said. "Jerry Baldwin was terminated over his tenure. The team had a record of 6-27 and attendance was terrible. The program was not going in the right direction."
In closing arguments for the eight-day trial, Bernard said white coaches before and after Baldwin got new equipment and had a greater ability to market the football program via a coach's television show and through the university's marketing department.
Baldwin worked with used equipment, the marketing director was fired his second year on the job, and he never had a coach's show to promote the football program, Bernard said.
Oats said the same officials now accused of racial discrimination made the first black head coach at a major Louisiana university.
Jurors voted 10-2 to award Baldwin $500,000 for general damages, including emotional distress; $600,000 for past lost wages; $900,000 for future lost wages, and $2,676 for special damages.
The same administration officials now accused of racial discrimination are the same people who gave Baldwin the job as the first black head coach at a major Louisiana university, Oats argued.
He also said there are no signs that Baldwin's ability to get another job in coaching has been hampered by the firing, and Baldwin's attorneys did not present any evidence that he suffered extreme emotional distress.
Oats said Baldwin is now a minister at New Living Word Ministries in Ruston.
