Nope. Saban wasn't really on anybody's radar when the coaching search started; it was Saban that made first contact with LSU to let them know he was interested.

Once Saban interviewed, then he became LSU's clear No. 1 choice and the fact that they made him the highest paid coach in football supports that.

Skip had nothing to do with that decision he was the baseball coach. Mark Emmert ran the search after Saban's agent reach out, he did an interview and it was game over.

Some of how the OP's question is answered depends on how one defines "first choice." First person contacted? Interviewed? Offered? It's not often that all the behind the scenes calls, etc are made public.

the way I look at 1st choice is was someone offered the gig and turned it down.

So those that were hired would be Miles, Saban and Bo Rein for sure.


Hallman, Archer, Dinardo were picked after other options went off the table.

Skip was the baseball coach at the time. I don't think he knew much about the search for a football coach.
