Anybody know when the last time LSU hired their 1st choice?

He was emmert's #1. Was blown away in the interview and gave him the highest coaching salary at that time.

Teams rarely get their number one and it's not neccesarily a bad thing.

Hell, Saban wasn't even Bama's first choice.

He was. But at the time Mal Moore had to move quickly to appease the fanbase. Saban wouldn't talk in December. That's when things moved forward with Rich Rod. Thankfully the talks broke down. Moore then waited on Saban.

I'm not sure that should be the objective. Arkansas is more than happy with their coach who was at least their second choice. I wonder if Jeff Long pulls the trigger on Bret now that his first choice is available.
