Pelini never lost more than 4 games in a season and won at least 9 every season. Riley has lost at least 4 games or more every single year with 4 losing seasons and no conference/division titles. That is a definite downgrade.

This is going to turn into another Frank Solich/Bill Callahan situation where Nebraska fired a wining coach and replaced him with a coach who drove the program down.

Sounds like an LSU fan is running their Athletic Department.

Most likely because they are smart enough to realize that it isn't going to get any better with Bo. He would continue to just win 9 games for however long he was allowed to stay. It's basically the same situation with Miles at this point but Nebraska took a risk probably knowing it could get worse before it gets better. They obviously want more out of their football program, and maybe they didn't make the right hire this time but who knows......

It is a pretty big gamble of a hire. If he is a success and wins, then it looks like a genius move, but if he tanks Bill Callahan-like, then there will be hell to pay in Lincoln.

It's apparent that they thought they would snap their fingers and Bielema would come running. When that didn't happened they didn't have a backup plan and here we are.

I was admittedly mixed on the Pelini firing. To fire a 67-27 coach is risky, but if there's a better option out there, take it.

I'm not sure Mike Riley is that better option. If they hired Jim Tressel, I'd think otherwise.

Bo should have been fired but I guess a lot of possible coaches were turned off by the idea of them firing a pretty successful coach and that their options were few.

Still a bad hire, IMO.

+ 1
but I am thinking that Bo may have made some enemies with his "off the cuff" comments thru the years.
...otherwise, it is hard to understand the change at this time.

A really good football coach. Pelini pissed off to many people and unloaded on his players on national tv, only Saban can do that.

They wanted a change because Tom Osborne isn't walking thru that door. They did not upgrade at all.

I don't think they were. Or didn't think it through properly.

They should have had a coach locked up to fire Pelini. I don't think Riley is a terrible hire like some blowhards, but I think they do look foolish regardless of Pelini's personality.

I thInk Riley is a good coach, and I wouldn't be surprised if he does as well or better than Pellini. People who know the game can tell he can coach. It comes down to whether he can step up to a higher level in recruiting. If so, he has easier access to better talent than he had in Corvalis. That was already a tough place to build a program, and it's gotten a LOT tougher with the rise of Nike U.

They wanted the Anti-Pelini and that is exactly what they got. The dude is a good coach and is basically the complete opposite of Bo.
