Riley was the third choice. Better question is what is Mike Riley thinking?
I think he was smart to get out while he still had a shot. He was a dark horse candidate who's name came up often 6-8 years ago because OSU was more competitive and winning consistently. Now, Oregon has left them in the dust, the PAC 12 has finally started getting some depth, and that left him in a no-win situation. There is no way they can compete with Phil Knight's money or the larger program to the south.
He had a really good run there, but the deck is now stacked against them. Their next coach is going to have a hell of a time keeping that program relevant.

This is going to turn into another Frank Solich/Bill Callahan situation where Nebraska fired a wining coach and replaced him with a coach who drove the program down.
I am sure Nebraska fans were like "We will be fine as long as we do not hire a coach in the vein of Bill Callahan."
Then........ "mother fu.........."

Callahan and Riley are polar opposites
Callahan was a career OL coach with 5 years of D1 college experience.
Riley on the other hand has been a Head Coach since 1997 with nearly 20 years of college coaching experience.

Am I crazy for thinking Riley is a pretty good coach? Maybe he was just good at Oregon State for whatever reason and he doesn't pan out at Nebraska, but Oregon State was just about the Kansas State of the West Coast before Riley showed up. This seems like knocking Bill Snyder for not putting up 9-4/10-3 seasons every year at K-State.
