Oh No! We're Gonna Die: Humorous Tales of Close Calls in the Alaskan Wilderness

Travels in Alaska - John Muir

Interesting contrast between the two books. Alaska has changed enormously since Muir's time.

Posted this in the Funny Books thread, but it's applicable for this one too.

quote:

Some of my favorite "funny" books were the old Patrick F McManus books. He wrote in similar style to "A Christmas Story", but his books were about hunting, camping, and fishing as a kid. If you're interested, start with "A Fine and Pleasant Misery" followed by "They Shoot Canoes, Don't They?" and "Never Sniff a Gift Fish".

Into Thin Air
Into The Wild

Both John Krakauer books. Both true accounts. Both extremely well written. Both better than their movies

Check out the Gordon MacQuarrie "Old Duck Hunters" series, the Robert Rourke "Old Man and the Boy" series, anything by Gene Hill-"A Listening Walk" is a favorite, Guy de la Valdene-"For a Handful of Feathers"

It's got some dragging parts, but Wild by Cheryl Strayed is pretty good.

Wilbur Smith - Assegai

Really anything by Wilbur smith, he's like Hemingway and 50 Shade of grey combined. Good quick reads about Africa (from every era - Pharoah Egypt to modern day, and he doesn't mince the sex, the hunts or the violence).

Try Desert Solitaire. You'll like it.

Written while Abbey was working as a ranger at Arches National Park outside of Moab, Utah, Desert Solitaire is a rare view of one man’s quest to experience nature in its purest form.

Have you tried Silent Spring?
