It really is. I can't tell you how many times I've used my highlight and note features on my Nook reading ASOIAF.
So where do you guys think Benjen Stark is? Alive? Hooded Man in Winterfell? Hostage of the Others? One of the leaders of the Others?

Dead.
I think we will find more signs of what he did after he left castle black but I think he is one of those mysteries GRRM will leave unknown. Like I've said before, he has served his purpose and I can't see of any other reason to bring him back.
We may find out what happened to him but I don't think we'll ever see him alive again.

I still like to think he was possibly the Hooded Man in Winterfell. Or still alive beyond the wall and getting as much info as he can on the Others.

Benjen Stark may be with the Others. Similar to the story of the Night's King. In AGOT, he speaks to Jon of love. My crackpot theory is that he has an Other love, and has been with them similar to the way Jon was with the Wildlings.

Thats certainly possible, the half hand spent a whole winter beyond the wall although I don't understand why he wouldn't have come back and tell the watch what he was up to by now. If he really is still alive and wondering in the wilderness beyond the wall by choice the blood of all the brothers who died on the fist of first men is on his hands. As his irresponsibility is what led them to march in force.

I'm not sure Ben could be the Hooded Man without breaking his NW vows. To be that far from the wall, he would need to be on some kind of mission that the Lord Commander would know about.

I'm not sure we really know what the Others are. I'm not even sure if they are the bad guys. He is something GRRM wrote about them:

I think Benjen is preparing for war North of the Wall somehow. My theory is that he has realized that the NW has become a band of incompetents, and is taking matters into his own hands.
