The D&E stories actually provided a ton of background on the Targs, the Great Bastards, the Golden Company, etc. All of which appears to be relevant to the bigger story going forward.

I wish he would put off his Dunk and Egg novels and strictly focus on finishing ASOIAF but I guess that's too much to ask . You'd think that with a highly successful HBO series that he'd be motivated to finish the books in a reasonable time frame.

I actually don't mind the dunk and egg stuff so much, and that's actually pretty normal for writers. Most writers get bored if they write the exact same series constantly, and do some other side project between books of a series.

The problem with Martin is he is just so slow while doing that, and that mainly comes down to not having enough "butt in seat" time as other authors have put it. He's just off visiting conventions for half the damn year, and that's his main issue.

That and he needs to stop editing book collections.

The Dunk and Egg stories were great. And they're not bad stories even as a stand alone deal. If he ever writes it I'm looking forward to the next one that is supposed to deal with the early days at Winterfell and the Starks.

Yeah, they are good stuff. The short story “The Princess and the Queen” coming out in Dangerous Women should be an interesting read as well I'm sure.

I'm not hating on D&E, just saying that GRRM should take a break from them to release WoW at a reasonable time .

I think he is using D&E to set up some of his ASoIaF points of interest. We get some history in those that otherwise would have taken pages to even briefly explain. But yeah he needs to hurry the hell up.

I am going to love this thread, I missed so much stuff like this over my first read of series.

So is it a stretch to think Jon's watch has ended and re-Jon can go ball on some Frey's?

I think Un-Cat has that on lockdown pretty much. But I do think his death will free him from the watch, yes. It'll be interesting to see how everything shakes out up north next book.

I'm not so sure Martin is as lazy as he is savvy. He is acutely aware of the special time he's in right now, and is savoring every minute...stretching his window of popularity and banking bigtime every opp he gets to travel and give speeches, readings, etc.

Once the series is completed, he will still be popular, but never again as talked about and sought after as he is now, with the fates of all these characters undecided...

Of course, the show is a huge complication regarding just how long he can keep this up...unless, of course, he decided before hand to have alternate endings...I hope it's not the case, and I think once he finished Kong and Son of Kong, he thought the rest would be a breeze, and the timing was finally appropriate to adapt it to TV...he had (at the time) what he must've thought of as an insurmountable head start, and probably just unraveled the Mereneese Knot mentally...plus he knew HBO would be the only way to do it right.

I hope he still feels that way, cuz there is the chance that he has procrastinated so much that the timeline he's left himself is not possible.

...maybe he has become such the megalomaniac he no longer really cares about the story, (as much as he once did, anyway) and since he has already reached the ultimate goal many times over of writing for a living...I fear after all these years he's just spent his wad...the last two books could have easily broken any writer's back...Now he's stuck between deadlines and quality, and having stood by quality for so long he just can't do it anymore...

Well, I hope not.

Seriously, I think he has big plans for Jon...just not it the way most have been led to believe. (some members of the House excluded, of course)

The secret heir reveal has been done to death in fantasy...even the incest thing, all the back to "Le Morte d'Arthur" (1485 for chrissakes)the traditional approach would be Jon,the bastard = the great hero...I don't see it. Jon the Great Other seems to be the logical Martin thing to do, although he has set up Bran to be the villain, as well.

I still believe R+L=J, but I don't think Jon the legit heir to the Iron Throne. Too Hokey for Martin. They weren't married, Rhaegar had best knights there to protect AA/TPtwP, not his heir to the throne.

It still annoys me that none of our oh so clever schemers ever thought to question the whereabouts of those three during the war. We all figured it out easily enough but Littlefinger, Varys, Tyrion, Tywin, Doran Martel, etc., never saw anything odd about the absence of three KG or the timing of Ned showing up with a bastard. And there's apparently nothing of these events in the White Book of the Kingsguard.

Bastards were very common place and Ned Stark was known to always tell the truth. Ned was away at war, and it has been stated in the books that wars lead to an abundance of bastards. KG were absent because they were with Rhaegar. All 3 KG died so they couldn't put it in the White Book. Additions seem to be added after events take place.

But apparently only Ned found it odd that they weren't with him at the Trident.

Wouldn't Selmy have written some account of their actions during the war? Granted, he's much like Ned in that he's so stiffly honor bound that he might as well be blind in some ways.

But it is hard to see how Martell didn't figure it out. He had to have heard some version of the events at the tourney at Harrenhall. And then Ned shows up with a bastard in Dorne. Or maybe he did figure it out but had no interest in backing Jon as he is the result of Rhaegar dishonoring Elia?

right, the KL crew may not have known their whereabouts. As we've seen with certain characters like the mountain and dondarrion, wars make it difficult to know exactly where people are at any given time, even for little birds.

that is odd. he would have known if they died in battle. where did he think they were? i guess Ser Gerald Hightower didn't bother to tell him either.

Lets talk arya; I will be seriously pissed if she stays across the narrow sea. I see someone (power hungry cersei) hiring the faceless men to kill jeyne thinking jayne is knocked up. Ayra is contracted to kill her and says frick it then starts killing people via faceless man skills/warg with the army of wolfs.

Bran also connects somehow with ayra and Jon to help them understand their power.

Sansa hopefully gets her shite together while learning the game from littlefinger. She kills littlefinger because he plots against her after realizing the monster he created.
