Question Time
Was Syrio Farrell actually Jaqen H'gar?
We know that Trant faced him with five other men but we never see him get killed. We know that this happened in Kings Landing. We know that Trant never talked about it again. Where was jaqen taken from? King's Landing. Maybe he wasn't killed, only taken captive then switched faces in the cells to what we know as Jaqen to be taken to the wall.
Did Ned get Varys to make a deal with the faceless men to save Arya's life?
Did little finger make the deal to save another one of Catelyn's daughters the way he saved Sansa?
Did someone stand in for Ned at the execution?

So wait, the Westerosi Supreme Court hasn't ruled on Prop 8 yet? Wow, the Free Cities are so right. The West really is as backward and barbarian as they say it is.

I doubt he's at the wall. The Alchemist is described as having the exact same features as Jaqen's face when he left Arya. I think he's in Oldtown.

Lucky for them Joffrey is about to take care of all that..."perversion"

It's not made explicit in the books. I know some have argued that these things could be explained by a lost love (I've even seen guesses that he was in love with Hoster's wife - no evidence for that though).
Also, in marriage by the nobility, I don't think being gay would necessarily prevent it. Ie: Renly.
All of that said, it could well be that he is gay. I think in the show the actor is subtly portraying it this way.

I dont know. That's one masculine gay guy if so. I mean, I'm not saying there aren't macho gay people. But if you're trying to hint at it, being super badass isn't the best way to go about it. And his character is indeed a Chuck Norris super badass.

Ah so it was Loris and Blackfish who poisoned Joffrey! Makes much more sense than Littlefinger just doing it for kicks. This is a war of equal rights we have on our hands.

Loras is kinda a super badass to an extent as well, not like that really proves anything one way or another. And having a subdued badass gay guy would be a nice counterpoint to the usual Renly type character.

He's a committed bachelor, not to be bound by any split tail.
He's too wild to settle down.

Just rewatching it today, the tone of voice and phrasings he was using when talking to Cat just made me think that they were at least leaving it ambiguous.

Loras is a "pretty boy" though.

He is, but he is also very soft spoken and chivalrous. I mean, he's called the Knight of Flowers. That's subtle enough.
The Blackfish is deep spoken, gruff, blunt, and borderline rude. I'm not saying gays cant be any of those, just that if they were trying to be subtle, they should have gone more the Loras route. Unless we don't know of some future event that will tell us that he's gay eliminating the need for subtle hints.

He's the blackfish, not the blackbear, amirite?

No one tell Colonel Toddy. We've got enough crazy in here already.

Not like Martin has to make everything cut and dry, things can actually be ambiguous. And gays can most definitely be all of those things. I have a friend that wound up being gay that you would have never guessed in a bazillion years without him telling you, it happens.
I'm not 100% sold either way on him being gay in the books, but I tend to think it would require more than just turning down marriage offers to get a nickname called the blackfish though.

Regarding Syrio: for the longest time I was hoping he'd pop back up some way or other. But it's been so long, I'm pretty resigned to him not showing back up.
But of corse, there is the Wild Bill Guanere school of thought: "if there ain't no body, there ain't nobody fricking dead"

Like being the "black sheep" of the house with a fish for its sigil?

That's what I mean, it would seem to take more than simply turning down marriage offers to get a nickname which basically means black sheep.

Oh i totally agree. Just would be a poor character to use if you were trying to hint to readers that he was gay. That's all I'm saying.

That's basically what I'm getting at. Where there's smoke, there's fire, and I don't see any actual smoke coming up from the guy other than he isn't married (hell I'm not married either - maybe I'm gay?)
