They're definitely encouraged to make conversation at Publix. Some keep it general: to the weather, are you doing, etc. Some comment on the items, One of the older ladies always comments on my items. When I bought a pregnancy test, I specifically went to her lane just to see what she would say...

Last night I brought the groceries in, but got distracted and forgot to put them up. Pitched some ground beef, chicken and yogurt. The milk was laying on top of a bag of ice, so we're calling that salvaged. Chalked it up to experience/idiocy. ...

I just answered that question on someone's facebook wall last night. The one with the claps is called "Floppy.". But most people outside the drumline call it something like "doom da ka."...
