We are a small company that is operated 100% by residents in the favela of Rocinha. Our company consists of five parts of sustainable tourism in the favela. Our main purpose is to educate people about our community and the great things that exist here.
Favelatour.org and FAVELA ADVENTURES strives to empower the people of Rocinha by giving them the opportunity to run, organize and make the tours themselves. These residents who have created this company ALL reside in the favela and the income made from these tours is put directly back into the community.

Yes, my buddy did one in Rio.
The favelas have a vested interest that tourists come in so odds something happens are low.
I did a similar tour in Delhi where the money goes to charity.

What was the tour/company called in Delhi? My old boss did something like that in his Grad studies at Georgetown and have wanted to do it ever since I heard him talk so highly of it. Would you recommend it?

Been on a favela tour in Rio, never felt I was in danger. Copacabana during the nighttime is a whole other thing.

Agree but I didn't do a tour, I just walked through.

Completely disagree. I walked through Copacabana all the time at night and never felt like I was in any danger

Did the mountain bike course. Look it up on YouTube.

I did a favela tour in Rio. It was excellent and very safe. I saw drug dealers with machine guns but they don't even acknowledge you. They actually looked embarrassed and looked away.
Leblon/Ipanema was the best area of Rio imo. Be careful in copa there are hookers/AIDS

Salaam Balaak Trust then add Walk
Ya, I would. Even though anywhere in India you will be surrounded by poverty at levels you've never seen in the US it's educational to get the story. The guides are former street kids the Trust has taken off the street and fixed up. And it's free unless you want to donate, which you should so you don't go to hell.

Aren't they kind of a charity case themselves? Would be tough to disperse small donations to the whole favela hood though.

Huh?
Of course the charity is a charity case.
I'm not sure I follow, mostly because whatever I think you're trying to say is applicable to all charitable organizations.
I mean, I could donate to a food bank, or run around town doing it myself, but one is more efficient than the other.
But either way, in Rio or Delhi I wouldn't pass it up.

We got chased (in our business clothes) by 4 kids with bats on a Sunday night after leaving dinner. We were a good ways from the main road by the beach. Made it to a bar right along there that was packed, only to realize it was tranny night...and yes we realized it was tranny night before it was too late.

Next time stay out in Barra da Tijuca. It's very nice out there but you will be about an hour from all the tourist spots in Rio.
Give yourself a day to climb Pedra da Gavea or Pedra Bonita. Make sure you know where you're going because there's not a big entrance
