My wife and I are heading out on a cruise from the port of Miami in November. As of now, our thoughts were to fly from MSY to FLL via the cheaper Southwest "wanna get away" flights. We would then take a taxi/shuttle from FLL to Miami.

We are thinking about flying in a couple days in advance and staying in Miami for a couple nights since neither of us have been to this part of Florida.

I have some free nights in Hyatt thanks to my Chase Hyatt rewards card, and want some advice on which Hyatt you would recommend in this area.

I believe our choices are:
The Confidante (Previously Thompson Miami Beach Hotel)
South Beach Area with direct beach access

Hyatt Centric South Beach Miami
Also south beach area, this one I believe is a few blocks off of the beach.

Hyatt Regency Miami
This one is near downtown Miami.

Which are would be best for visiting 1-2 days, most likely without a vehicle. I'm not sure if we will rent a car yet or not.

Ft. Lauderdale might as well be in Georgia in relation to Miami.

If you want to see Miami/South Beach, then stay there. You can get a nice airbnb on South Beach for not very much money.

My question was which one would be more worth spending our short amount of time in...Miami or Ft. Lauderdale. I was just browsing on airbnb and they do have some nice affordable places, but it's hard to pass up not using our free nights at a Hyatt of our choice. I never expected to stay in Ft. Lauderdale and see Miami, I figured it would be one or the other.

Oh I just assumed you wanted to see Miami. I've never heard any one say "I want to visit Ft. Lauderdale."

So I say Miami.

Bump for some edits to the original post and to catch the weekday crowd.

The Confidante (Previously Thompson Miami Beach Hotel)

I stayed at this one last year when it was still The Thompson. We really liked the property. It is in the beach area a little way down from South Beach with direct beach access. It is perfect because South Beach is wayy too crowded. Also this Hotel has a really cool concept. Couldn't help but be reminded of Mad Men. If you are trying to relax by some great water - I'd recommend this hotel.

Few things to note from when it was still The Thompson. This might have changed with the new management:
- They have great events in the evenings where you can hang out around the huge pool area and have fun
- Beach Chairs and Towels were free but Beach Umbrellas were $20 per day and Cabana's were $100

For perspective - I've also stayed at the W South Beach. And even though W is my favorite chain of hotels, I would go back to the Thompson before I went to the W because of price and crowded location.

Thanks for that, the more my wife and I discuss this though...we were thinking that maybe we should spend our time seeing Miami rather than hanging out on the beach. Our cruise will involve enough beach/water/relaxation days.

Fair enough. Then your free nights may be better used elsewhere
