What about toll roads in WV, VA, & NC without an E-Zpass?

I'm going to be driving to DC in a couple of days. In looking at my route I see that I'll probably be on some toll roads in NC, VA, and WV. I don't have an E-ZPass, wish I had decided on my route earlier. Is it possible to pick one up along my way? My route going up passes through WV and VA, won't hit NC until heading back. If I don't have one does anyone know about tolls in those states? Should I just stock up on rolls of quarters? TIA!

Unless it has changed in the past year the only toll roads I can think of on your way to DC from the southeast are in the DC area; and I think they have non-toll lanes as well. Presumably the toll lanes move faster. I have driven to DC from NC many times and have never paid a toll.

But even if you get on a toll road many toll booths are not manned and they just send you a bill in the mail.
North of DC you will find more toll roads.

What is your route to and from?

If you're traveling along the interstates, I'd expect you can buy an EZ- Pass in the welcome center as you enter a state. I know you can do that in Florida.

I'd also expect you may be able to get one online.

ETA: Here's a link to retailers in VA that carry EZ-Pass.

Yeah, with a fine for not paying the toll.

In an unmanned booth there is no one to give $ and not everyone has ezpass.

They scan your license plate and mail you a bill. There is no fine but the toll may be a little more than with out the ezpass and there will be an admin charge. That’s assuming you drive through the tool booth using the correct lane. I have gotten bills where the admin charge of a few bucks is more than the $.75 toll.

I looked at a bunch of routes and tried to come up with places I hadn't passed through before. I'm taking 3 days to get there but only 2.5 to return (with a visit in Norfolk in between).

Tuesday Shreveport to Nashville
Wednesday Nashville to Charleston WV
Thursday Charleston to DC
--
Sunday afternoon Norfolk to Greensboro NC
Monday Greensboro to Huntsville AL
Tuesday Huntsville to Shreveport

EZ- Pass
May actually try to pick one up along the way, too late for online as I'm leaving in the morning. Called my local AAA office but they don't carry them.

That sounds easy (assuming I pay attention to the lane to use). Thank you.

In DC area, most of the toll roads are for the HOV lanes. A couple exceptions are 66 inside the beltway during the weekdays and faster road going to Dulles.

Tuesday Shreveport to Nashville - no tolls on this route

Wednesday Nashville to Charleston WV - looks like 3 options and one has tolls; I40 to I81 to I77. I77 has tolls in WV; per google it's 3 booths, $4 at each. I think they have attendants so you have to pay.

Thursday Charleston to DC - if you backtrack to Beckley on I77 you will have tolls. But no tolls if you take I79 until you get near DC.
Around DC I think some interstates become toll roads during rush hour otherwise they are not. It may just be the express lane that is a toll. If you do not get an ezpass transponder you might want to exit I 66 before you get to the Capital Beltway (I 495 I think). Maybe someone that lives near DC can help you with this.

Sunday afternoon Norfolk - you may have toll roads around here; I know if you cross Chesapeake Bay to the eastern shore there is a toll. They will mail you a bill. Other wise you should not have any tolls back to S'port.

I just drove through NY, CT, MA, VT, NH and ME in a rental car. Tons of tolls and didn’t have an EZ Pass, but the rental company sent me a bill afterwards. Once you pass through the toll though it says you can pay your bill online within 7 days. I imagine it’ll be something similar where you’re heading.

There’s only one toll road (to my knowledge) in NC and it’s very avoidable. Not sure why anyone traveling from out of state would even need to get on.

It’s by the airport and only really used by commuters going from RTP/Durham area to the suburbs south of there and vice versa

There isn’t a toll booth and anyone who uses it without an EZ pass just gets a bill in the mail

As everyone said, they'll mail you a bill if you don't have a ez pass and use the lane. With that said, if you do plan to do a fair bit of driving in and around d.c. I always found the hov and ez pass lanes worth every dollar, assuming you're traveling the direction of the ezpass lanes (in some areas the dedicated lane reverses direction based on the time of day). When I lived in rva and would go to d.c. it would save 30mins or more on traffic time.

My only other advice is that if you do the west Virginia route that has tolls, don't try to exit and avoid them. Just pay the toll. I took a route from rva to Columbus oh which went through Charleston in the middle of the night. I decided to try to avoid the toll, took an exit and was in the backwoods sketchy area for about 40mins before I could get back in again. Not worth it
