Going to Washington DC for a week. I know there is a ton of stuff to do and see... what shouldn't I miss?
We will hit the big ticket items, I'm more interested in the not so well known cool stuff.

If you plan to see the White House you need to contact your representative or senator way ahead of time to schedule it. Also schedule a capitol tour and liberry of congress the same way. Grab a cold brew and burger at the Tune Inn after the Capitol tour.

Go to the national portrait gallery. Its less crowded than other museums and has some really interesting stuff to it. Also, you could provide some details on composition of your group, time spent in dc, and when you will be travelling. All will significantly impact recs.

I was generally underwhelmed by the museums I went to in the mall but they were mostly free. I'm not saying they were not good museums, simply that they didn't blow me away as the best museums I've seen. Maybe I expected too much I'm not sure. But my only recommendation would be if you do go to them go to the ones that house stuff you would not see elsewhere.
I would definitely do the capitol tour.

You should also request Washington monument tickets ahead of time or you will need to stand in line the morning of the visit starting at about 7:30

I would say some of the best "lesser known" (compared to the surefire sites) things in DC would be:
Library of Congress (highly recommend this)
Ford Theater
National Portrait Gallery
Udvar Hazy Center (Smithsonian Air & Space Annex) by Dulles
Bureau of Engraving
Also a day trip up to Baltimore to see Fort McHenry or Annapolis wouldn't be that difficult.
Then obviously hit up the known things like the White House, Capitol, Monuments, Supreme Court, National Archives, Smithsonian Museums, and Arlington.

OP: listen to DaBeerz because those are great suggestions- especially the Marine Corp Band. I'll also add:
Arlington Cemetery
Eastern Market on a weekend morning
Grab lunch at a food truck (DC has a great food truck scene)
Northern VA (Leesburg/Purcellville) has a lot of great vineyards and some beautiful scenery along with it
If you have the time take a morning, drive up to Annapolis, & tour the Naval Academy

Go up to POV bar during a clear day. It is at the top of the W Hotel. You get a clear view of Washington Monument, Potomoc, White House etc.
Mussels at Occidental Grill are good right down the street from there. A lot of people like going to Old Ebbitt Grill right next door to all of this too for a meal. I wouldn't recommend it these days. Really turned into a tourist trap. Go to The Hamilton instead. Right around the corner, same ownership group, less of a wait/crowd etc.

For the band you need to request tickets in advance (google 8th and I summer parade tickets) and be aware that they only perform on Friday nights from the beginning of May to end of Aug. On Tuesday nights they perform at the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington. No tickets needed, bring your blanket, chairs, beverages, etc. and sit wherever you like. If you have kids the Tuesday deal is much better because Friday night performances can be quite long and the bleachers can be difficult to manage with a young ones.
If you are spending a lot of time in DC Mount Vernon is also worth a visit, and for another lesser heard of museum check out the Smithsonian air and space annex (called the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center) by Dulles. Its a giant hangar with an SR71, the Enola gay, a space shuttle, a concorde, and a bunch of military aircraft.
If Catholic, also check out the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
