Heading to DC with wife and 3 kids (ages 4, 8 and 10). Any suggestions for unusual or lesser-known activities, sites, tours, etc?
We plan to do all of the Smithsonians, zoo, Spy Museum, White House, US Capitol, Arlington cemetery, Colonial Williamsburg.

We were there for Mardi Gras 2015. We had reservations at Central Restaurant on Pennsylvania Avenue for a big Mardi Gras party and dinner planned for Mardi Gras night, but that day there was a snowstorm and the whole city was shut down. They called us an told us that the dinner was being rescheduled for Thursday, the day after Ash Wednesday. The second day of lent is a strange day for a for a Mardi Gras celebration, but we went to it and it was great. They had New Orleans style food, drinks and a jazz band. If you are at all homesick, you might want to look in to that.

Took my daughter at Mardi Gras a few years ago. Go to mount Vernon. House was neat, but grounds were beautiful and George and Martha are entombed there. We did that then hit Arrington on the way back. All very sobering.
We also went to China town which we enjoyed. Kid loved Chinese food back then.

Heading to DC also for Mardi Gras. Got a White House tour on Mardi Gras day. Can add to your list Ford's Theater.

+1 on Mount Vernon, especially if the weather is nice. The grounds are extensive, with lots of interesting things to see scattered around. If the gristmill is running, go see that too. You can get there cheaply by taking the yellow line metro to Huntington station, then getting the Fairfax Connector bus #101 just outside the metro station. It will drop you off directly in front of the Mount Vernon entrance.
Of the museums on the Mall, the Native American museum has the better/more interesting food. It's cafeteria, but it's not quite as basic/kid-centric as Air&Space or National History. There's an underground walkway between the two halves of the National Gallery of Art with a gelato counter, which makes a nice pit stop, esp if the weather is very cold or wet.
Also on the Mall is the temporary ice rink in the Sculpture Garden, which also has an outdoor cafe. It stays open late (9 pm/11pm some days), so it's a good, kid-friendly evening activity. The Mall monuments are beautifully lit at night, so you can stroll, sightsee, then go ice skating. Hours, etc here: LINK

Three suggestions that I don't see on your list: the Library of Congress, the Kennedy Center, and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. All are beautiful and offer one-hour overview tours. The Library of Congress has a small children's library that your kids might enjoy. And check the schedule for the Kennedy Center - sometimes there are children's performances or ballets. It's a cool thing to do in the evening, since there isn't much else to do with kids in the evenings in DC.

Yes. When you take the tour of the Capitol, make sure you go to the Library of Congress which can be accessed by walking through a tunnel from inside the Capitol building. That is one of the most impressive interiors this side of a European palace.
