Looking to do a trip to the USVI in July. Would like to stay on St John more than likely. The couple we are going with want to stay at caneel bay as they went there for honeymoon. For me it seems really expensive for what it is, seems like a resort from the 80s and doesn't have any luxuries especially for 4500 plus food.

Any other places y'all recommend? Maybe some cool places other than the Virgin Islands? I did like the look of the caves in Jamaica.

Just VRBO a private villa. You can even hire a chef each night for a combined price cheaper than Caneel.

Then its basically Caneel Bay or the Westin.

What's the appeal of Caneel for them over a private home with your own pool and views?

Caneel Bay is a first class resort. That's what you're paying for. It is outstanding.

You can also stay at the Westin if you don't want to spend as much. It's nice but it's no Caneel Bay.

is all I can say to that one.

Not on St. John. Not a decent villa and certainly not a 2 bedroom in Grande Bay.

Guess things have changed since 2010...but we had a 2BR 2BA private villa. Had a pool and outdoor barbeque area too. Both bedrooms were master suites. All with unobstructed views of Coral Bay.

Villa owner lived in another property on the island and provided us with the contact information for a chef to prepare dinner for about $125-150/nt.

Just went on VRBO. Looks like a 2 bed 2 bath starts at about $360 a night and goes up from there. Of course, the closer to Cruz Bay the more expensive it gets but it looks like your guestimate was in the ball park. Apologies.

Haven't used the pool. We stay at Grande Bay but we've eaten at Zozos several times and it's a great restaurant. If you stay at Caneel I think you'll enjoy it. It's close to Cruz Bay and that's where the nightlife is.

Back to these questions.

Jamaica is a shite hole compared to St. John. There's no comparison.

St. John is tough to beat because of its' proximity to the BVI. You can day trip on a boat or take the ferry out to Jost Van Dyke or Tortola. Virgin Gorda and Adegada are within reach and are a great experience and if you like bars then Jost or the Willie T at Norman Island are excellent choices.

Depending on what you want to do there are other choices but the good islands are expensive. St. Kitts is awesome but the beaches aren't great. However, the island makes up for it and Nevis is a short trip away.

Providenciales, TCI is also a great choice as the beaches are incredible and the restaurants are as well.

Anguilla is another one with great beaches and fine dining.

All the ones I listed are on the expensive side but you get nice clean islands with friendly native people and good food and times.

Stayed right down the road from Caneel Bay in July. It's beautiful. For the price, however, I would highly recommend a VRBO on St John. We stayed at Mampoo House (sorry, not tech savvy enough to put a link but you can Google Mampoo House). Could walk to 2 beaches and it is a frickin awesome location for St John - especially if you like privacy. Can still access Caneel Bay Resort on a daily basis if you really want to, but I recommend getting out and exploring the island(s).
While there, also highly recommend a day on Kekoa (catamaran sailboat) - they take care of you!

Kekoa was fun but they only give you two hours on Jost. But...it's crewed by women in bikinis so there's that.

VABuckeye would you recommend the Westin villas or caneel bay? Think we down to those two I believe?

Personally I'd do Caneel. It's nicer.

I've rented from here many times.

Rent a Jeep and rent the villa on Bordeaux Mountain. You will have fantastic views, be secluded from everyone, and have your own private pool.

Appreciate the advice. Looks like we aren't going now because the other couple is set on caneel and my wife is dead set against it because they don't have a nice pool.

Don't really get my wife. Wtf is the point of traveling somewhere like that and just sitting in the damn pool? She always says she wants to travel but never wants to experience anything. Gonna take the dumb arse to golden nugget here in Lake Charles since all she wants is a nice pool.

Sorry that it fell through. Keep working on her. The last thing I want to do when I go to the Caribbean is sit by a pool. It makes zero sense to me.

Me either and last time we went to Jamaica she didn't understand why I kept wanting to go do excursions and at least enjoy the beach. She just wanted to stay by pool bar.

Gonna try and work on her, if she says no, maybe I can get her to commit to the caves in Jamaica or somewhere else that has a bad arse pool but has everything else also.
