Virgin Atlantic Says Austin’s Tech Bubble Is Starting to Burst as It Suspends Flights to the Texas State Capital

In my experience the load factors were due to an uncompetitive product on their 787's and the fact the route was only flown 3x weekly. Meanwhile British Airways flies their Flagship A350-1000 to Austin daily.

I actually didn't realize Virgin had a direct London route. We took BA route this summer and had a great experience. Never even here anyone talk about the Virgin route, only BA.

With Virgin having very little connectivity in Europe they had to rely on AUS/LON O/D traffic and Asian connections while BA can get you just about anywhere in the EU.

Haven't flown BA out of Austin but have taken the KLM flight a few times

If I remember correctly, didn't they at one point fly the 747/A380 on that route?

I have thoroughly enjoyed the 787 out of MSY to LHR.

A380 hasn't been to AUS yet. They've used the 787/777 and now A350 here in the past. If they had a 747 that was before my time in Austin

We flew on a BA 747 from Austin to London in 2019. Great experience.

I only got one 747 flight before BA retired them. LHR-JFK back in 2018

Real estate prices are beginning to reflect this. Inventory is now at an 8 year high and you are not seeing the bidding wars and people paying $150,000 over asking price like you did 18-24 months ago. Plus several homes are sitting on the market for many more days now than in 2022.

Downtown isn’t in good shape either with their very low occupancy rates for all of these high rise buildings you see.

Similar to oil and gas for Louisiana’s economy, tech is great for Austin as its primary economic driver, but it really needs to find some alternative economic engines not just rely heavily upon tech.

Oh, and property taxes seem to increase exponentially every year.

I know AUS has been looking for an Asia flight too, which probably is going to be a little more difficult if the tech market can't support it.

Everything is pointing to Korean Air adding a flight to Seoul. New Samsung factory means they'll have a lot of cargo to fill up the belly of the plane.

I’ve flown the BA route getting to Chennai 7 times in the last two years. The Virgin route was always about 35% more expensive.

Me too, I’m using it more than I thought I would.

Sleep my arse off on the way over there and hit the ground running.

Finally learned to resist the urge to sleep on the way back to MSY, instead I’m drunk.

I’m jealous of IAH, DFW, and ATL with a multitude of transatlantic nonstops.

American Airlines plans to significantly cut the number of destinations it directly serves from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
American Airlines Group Inc. (Nasdaq: AAL), ABIA's second-busiest passenger airline, recently submitted scheduling changes that indicate the Fort Worth-based airline plans to cut 21 of the 46 destinations that are currently offered from Austin in the coming year, according to data collected by Cirium Diio, an airline and airport scheduling service, and shared by the travel news website One Mile At Time.

I saw these route cuts, will try to post the specific ones when I'm home. Supposedly this is to fill the northeast routes that are going back to JetBlue so those E170s had to go elsewhere.

I had no idea AA was flying to Aspen, Bozeman, Albuquerque, etc. from Austin

Routes that are cut after January/February 2024. Austin to:

Albuquerque
Bozeman
Cincinatti
Cozumel
Vail
El Paso
Washington Dulles
Jacksonville FL
Liberia Costa Rica (April 2024)
Montego Bay Jamaica
Kansas City
Memphis
Nassau Bahamas
Oklahoma City
Punta Cana
Puerto Vallerta
Ft. Myers
Sacramento
Tampa
Tulsa
Destin/Ft. Walton

I had no idea AA was running all these routes. Sucks for the Austin crowd on here losing these options

Makes my attempts to avoid AA that much easier.
