Anyone ever do this? I'll be flying to Amsterdam for my honeymoon and if I were ever to upgrade my seats, that would be the time.

I've done some research but can't find what I'm looking for.

What would something like this cost? (It about an 8.5 hour flight) Are there different options? What kind of amenities do you receive? Is it worth it?

TIA

Which airline are you flying?

I know we always say it depends, but that is the truth. For example on a flight on United two weeks ago, for 900 dollars I could have upgraded to business class from economy, but that takes into account fare bought when purchased.

A lot of the European airlines give you the option to bid on business class on how much you are willing to spend. If they have open seats, you win.

And a lot of US carriers now also give you the option to purchase at check in.

Double edged sword here. If you do it you will love it but you won't ever want to not do it again. For me I enjoy the sleep I get. It helps me ensure I don't lose a day to jet lag. If you can afford it I say go for it for sure.

Just assuming because you're going to AMS you might be flying delta. I fly through there a lot for work, most of the time in business class. But if I was doing a personal honeymoon type trip, I wouldn't do it.

First, it's going to be expensive if you don't have points to spend -- that's money I'd rather use to stay at a nicer hotel or sight seeing. Second, you'll be in a lay flat pod which is nice traveling alone, but kind of isolated when you're traveling together (the middle pods are better, but still). Third, really all you're getting is an average meal and the lay flat seat. And the flight from ATL-AMS is more like 7.5 hours actual flying time, even shorter from JFK. By the time you have dinner, you only have 5 or so hours to go, the last of which is the approach so you aren't getting to relax then.

So if I was you, I might upgrade to economy comfort (or equivalent if not Delta), eat a good dinner before you board, snuggle up to your new wife and save some coin for more fun things. Just my 2 cents.

upgrade to economy comfort

Undortunately, this is the best I get for business trips, even to Asia. For vacations, I'm too cheap to upgrade anything, even with miles. I'd rather sit in basic economy and save the miles for free trips.

I do ATL to AMS at least once a month in one or the other direction, I feel fairly confident stating an upgrade ain't going to easy without status. Usually a waiting list of Platinums and Diamonds that you will never get ahead of if Delta/KLM, the other big carriers are about the same.

Best chance is the late flight out 22:55 I believe and the 0730 return.
