I second a day in Venice. It's an incredible city to walk around in and a gondola ride is pretty cool. We spent two days in Venice and really enjoyed exploring the city.

shite. Ok. You guys are making it tough for me. If it were me, I would blow and go. My wife likes to set up camp for at least several days.

We did Scandinavia a few years ago. Stockholm, Kalmar, Copenhagen, Trondheim, Bergen, and Oslo in 17 days. She hated packing/unpacking that much.

I'll try and work on her...

Holy shite! I get all this LINK for a little over $75/person?!? That's a deal.

Yep and for I believe 5 euros more a day you can add citywide Wifi also.

I thought it was a great deal also but I wanted to do most of the things on the list. If you only go to the Uffizi and Accademia some people may not see it as worth it.

I had suggested it to a friend who complained about the price since it's ~$25 more per person than just the tickets for those two museums.

To me, I'll gladly pay the extra every time to not wait in a surprise 3hr line.

Yeah. We bought skip the lines for everything we did in Paris. I see my time as valuable.

Btw, I highly suggest getting out of Naples quickly. It isn't a very nice city.

Also the regional train from Naples to Pompeii can get.... interesting. We had a crazy looking guy walking around with a knife on ours last time.

Maybe get a hotel in Riomaggiore or Monterosso,

Or Levanto. This is a small town on the end of Cinque Terre in the valley. Surrounded by lush mountains and straight ahead you see the sea. 3 mins to the Cinque Terre train station. Levanto will be cheaper, less crowded and almost jsut as beautiful, if not more.

I think 2-3 days in Venice is a perfect time to decamp and relax. Can take a day trip to the surrounding islands one day, explore Venice another, or take a day trip to Verona which has some well preserved roman buildings i.e. Coliseum and the fake Romeo and Juliet balcony, if you are into the Bard.

Yeah. We're just landing/training there and getting a car service straight to Positano. Unless we audible and go North...

Ok. I'll look into Venice more. Most people I talked to and/or read about Venice said one full day max. I figured that we could have a mostly Northern Italy/Switzerland trip at another point in my life.

Quick question regarding Amalfi Coast boat excursions. How rough is a boat excursion? Wife doesn't exactly have sea legs.

when i was in rome we used a tour guide who took us all around in a golf cart. it was incredible. we literally drive right up to the gates at all of the attractions (colosseum, forum, churches, etc.) it was insanely awesome. our driver for the trip was our tour guide for the day and he claimed that the golf cart was in some sort of gray area and some cops would ticket him, but most wouldn't.

i can get you the guy's contact information if you want it.

I really appreciate it, but honestly that's our favorite part about traveling. We get to walk 6-8 miles a day, see the people/cities, and then eat it right back on each night.

That does sound badass though. Right up there with those secret people at Disney that can skip lines.

Amalfi Coast boat excursions.
Positano is the perfect base from which to explore the AC. As I said we spent a week there in 2014. The food is great. We ate in fantastic restaurants ranging from Michelin starred places to mom and pop pizza joints. Pizza was invented in this area and they take it seriously. The boat excursions were easy. From the beach in Positano we took the ferry to other towns along the coast. One day we went to Capri. We took the ferry to the town of Amalfi twice. From Amalfi you can take a short bus ride up the mountain to Ravello. We love the Cinque Terre too. The AC reminds us of a larger scale version of the CT.

Except for Rome which was hit or miss we found the food in Italy to be stellar. Northern Italian food is ridiculously good.

I think one of the best parts about CT, though is its small size. I love that place.

Wow, great info in this thread! I'm going to refer to all the info for planning an upcoming trip. I'll actually be in Italy 2 weeks after OP on my honeymoon. We're flying into Genoa then train to Cinque Terre for 3 days. After going to Siena for 5 nights and traveling through the Tuscany area. After traveling to Rome for 4 nights. Haven't figured out specific details in each area except hotels and villas we'll be staying in. I'll continue to check back for any updates and suggestions. Looking forward to this trip

While Positano is nice, it ain't very big and there's not much to do. Which is great if that's what you are looking for.

I suggest catching a boat from Positano to Capri.

I would do a day less in Rome and Florence, rent a car and see Pisa, Sienna, Montalcino, San Gimignano. Then a day in Umbria. Assisi and Perugia along with a few hill towns are fantastic.

I would skip Naples! Take the train into Salerno from Rome and have driver scheduled to pick you up. You can use the local SITA bus to see Amalfi, Ravello, Sorrento and take the hydrofoil to Capri. From Sorrento you can take the local trail (Circumvesuviano) to the Pompeii Scavi exit. Enjoy!

You can also take the return train to Rome from Salerno!

I appreciate all of the advice. I'm taking tomorrow off, and the wife & I will start to plan excursions, tours, air bnb, hotels, and most importantly food.
