Going for a friend's wedding and making a family trip out of it.

We are renting a car for the trip. Drive from NOLA early on a Wed morning to Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine. Spending afternoon/evening and next day there. Check out and then drive to McKinney for to stay for two nights, a Thurs and a Fri. During day on Friday, drive back to Dallas for the aquarium, then back to McKinney for the wedding Fri night. Sat morning, get up early and drive to Ft Worth so the kids can see the Cattle Drive, and then drive to Houston for three nights, then back to NOLA.

Doing some research it looks like all the toll roads in DFW are now cashless. Did see where they can just scan your license plate and send you a bill, but not sure how that works in a rental. Looking at where we need to go, we could get by without doing any toll roads, but it would definitely add more travel time.

Any thoughts on how to handle this?

Also, if there are any must-see stops on the drive from NOLA to DFW or on the drive from Ft. Worth to Katy, would love to hear them. I'm always about stopping somewhere good to pee and for a bite to eat or something to see.

We will be hitting up every Buc-ees we can find.

A lot of times, if you are only in town for a few days Texas won't even bother sending you a bill for the tolls.

It might be different in a rental as some of those plates have probably come across the roads before. Check with the rental place and they can probably give you a car with a TexTag to save you some money. They will just put any tolls they are billed for onto the credit card you used to rent the car.

Enjoy your trip

I talked to Hertz. They said they have a system where they will read the license plate and charge my credit card for any charges. However, it's like 25 bucks just for them to set it up for that system, and then they charge me the toll on top of that.

Just wonder if anyone knew of a better way. I doubt I would spend $25 on tolls itself.

Zip Pass

Once you get your rental car and know the make, model and plate #, call NTTA Customer Service Center at 972-818-NTTA (6882) and they will set up a temp account for you billed to your CC and associated with the rental car plate#.....might wanna call ahead of time and verify they can set you up immediately.

quote:

A Zip-Pass account is a short-term method for visitors to pay for tolls while driving around town. It allows motorists in rental cars to avoid the additional fees and opt-in costs charged by rental car companies, and it allows visitors using a personal vehicle to pay their tolls on time without the hassle of ZipCash invoices. Your guests can simply call NTTA Customer Service Center at 972-818-NTTA (6882) and provide the following information:
A start and end date for the account
A debit or credit card number
Address and contact number
Make, model, year and color of vehicle
License plate number and state
Driver’s license number
The account can be opened for $5 per day with a minimum balance of $20. Similar to your TollTag account, the tolls (at the ZipCash rate) will be deducted from the initial balance charged to the card on file. When the balance drops below $10, the card on file will be charged another $20. Any remaining funds will be refunded approximately 45 days after the end date.

I rent from National and toll fees are charged to my credit card a week or two after the trip. There is no setup charge.

shite thats some moving around! I lived in west Mckinney for a few years. I was always on 121/Sam Rayburn Tollway. I mean daily! Never got a bill until I finally registered my vehicle in Tx after a couple of years. Come to think of it, I've been on just about all tollways west of San Antonio and never gotten a bill outside of the 121. Im guessing they don't put much effort into out of state vehicles. For your sanity try and avoid morning and early evening work traffic in North DFW. That stuff is crazy!
Possible spots of interest
-Cheaper tha dirt gun store in mckinney. It's petty but worth a walkthrough. They keep some pretty interesting stuff in there.
-AT&T stadium if you've never been
-Texas motor speedway. Im not into racing but I regret not checking it out.
-Allen High football stadium
-Dine at Reunion Tower
-Lower Greenville in Dallas is mandatory for food and drinks.
-Southfork Ranch
-Lake Conroe is a cool spot. You're going up I-45 right?
-Lake Lewisville is big on water sports. Just east of Frisco
-The crazy gravity thrill park. No thanks for me.
Dfw is full of art/sculpture parks, museums and statues. Not my thing either but its there.

I'm sure it's my wedding that you're attending. Thank you in advance. I would definitely suggest getting the Zip Pass, because you will be driving up and down 121. Really not a bad drive between Dallas and Houston, but there isn't much to do. Sam Houston Statue maybe?

The rental will likely have a toll tag and the tolls will be billed to your credit card by the rental company.

I recommend taking the train from Grapevine for this.

The statue and Lake Conroe is worth few minutes.
