I'm going to a bachelor party Memorial Day weekend in Cabo San Lucas. Due to my rotational schedule at work I'm off the week before. I'm thinking about flying into Mexico City the Monday before, then staying til Thursday and flying to Cabo. (Bachelor party starts Friday so I would get there a day early to relax)

Thoughts? Or should I just go to Cabo a few days earlier? Will be solo

I love Mexico City. I usually go at least twice a year.

Mexico City is huge and is broken down into a bunch of neighborhoods and zones.

The LA Condessa neighborhood is my favorite. It's full of great restaurants, bars, parks, etc. It's a quiter, laid back area. Mix of artists, musicans, and expats, but not hipstery.

The Reforma/Insurgetes neighborhood is great is well. It's more urban. A lot of office buildings and white collar workers, foreign embassies, banks, etc. It's great during the day but kind of dead at night. The Zona Rosa district adjacent to Reforma has a lot of night life, about half gay bars and half night clubs so be aware of which bar you're going to if that's going to be a problem. Do NOT go to any strip club. They are run by mexican mobs. There will be guys on the street with cards to the strip clubs saying they can get you in for free, but then you have to pay a ridiculous amount to leave.

There's also some cool stuff just outside the city. The ancient city of Teotihucan is about an hour out and has massive pyramids you can climb to the top and get some great views. Thereso a restaurant in a cave there, a little touristy but cool nonetheless. You can also go to Xochimilco and hire one of the Venice style boato and see the Aztec canal system.

Mexico City is a very cosmopolitan city and relatively cheap. You really feel like you're so much further from home, it has almost a European feel in some areas. But it can be dangerous and you really need to be aware of your surroundings and stick to safe areas. I would recommend hiring a car for the entire day, less than $80 US. Your hotel can arrange it for you. It's reputable since most concierge/valet get kickbacks from the drivers.

Let me know if you have any questions about hotels, getting around, etc.

I get down 2-3 times a year for business and have always had an enlightening experience. I travel with my clients and have seen/experienced the poor dangerous side and the safe well to do side. Traffic is a nightmare 24 hours day. I look forward to every trip down.

That sounds just like what I'm looking for. I would prefer to stay somewhere pretty quiet but still with cool parks, restaurants and art.

I went down a bunch for work a few years ago but we couldn't explore the city. People were being hung from the interstate and bodies were thrown in the interstate. It was a dangerous environment and it was stressful. We stayed in the rich business area where the cartels were not an issue. All of the rich Mexicans came to the restaurants near our hotel.

It's a relatively quiet area for a city of 9 million people.

The hotels there are all national or local, no worldwide hotel chains in Condessa.

My favorite restaurant in Condessa is Fonda Garfua. They have a great upstairs balcony which is great for sitting outside at nignt.

Do you have any ideas on good, cheaper hotels to stay in Condessa? I'm looking at hotels in Mexico City on Kayak and there are a million of them. What would be a reasonable price to expect to pay for a decent room?

I could do the hostel thing as well

Don't do a hostel. Good hotels are still cheap.

I think anything between $80-$100 USD/nt. should get you a nice hotel.

Great post. Appreciate the info.

How do you get around there? Taxi? Subway? Rent a car?

I'm planning a trip this summer and this seems to me to be the biggest question mark. I want to stay in the Polanco but I want to go check out the Zocalo, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and other things that are pretty far.

You're welcome, I am always excited when people show an interest in Mexico City, it really is a great city.

The best way to get around, especially if you are going to OLOG and other things on the outskirts, is to hire a car for the day. You can get it for less than $100 USD and they will take you wherever and wait for you while you're off doing your thing.

The subway is how I usually get to Zolcala in the day, but be aware of pickpockets and don't try to get on the women only subway car. I would stay away from the subway after dark. Taxis are cheap so its not worth the risk.

The subway is different. The train cars are on large rubber wheels so its pretty quiet. I believe the Mexico City subway system is the most used subway in the world. The bus system is pretty extensive as well, but traffic in Mexico City can be hectic to say the least so I will take the subway when it is advantageous.

Yeah my friend got his phone stolen on the subway over there. I was actually supposed to go with them but had to cancel due to work.

It shouldn't be a problem going by myself right? Any tips on safety or areas to avoid?

Not at all, just be aware of your surroundings.

The La Condessa, Reforma, Insurgentes, Zona Rosa areas are all safe in the evening. I wouldn't be in the Zocola after dark though.

Also, DO NOT buy any substances from anyone on the street. Save those vices for when you get to Cabo.

Cool, thanks..substances won't be an issue

Have you ever been to Guadalajara?

Or Todos Santos in Baja?

Just other options I could visit-Mexico City is definitely somewhere I need to go to, but I could visit either of these as well.

just making sure.

Guadalajara is nice, but Mexico City is much better.

It's one of those places that if you have a chance to visit you should.

Before your trip read First Stop in the New World by David Lida. It's a collection of stories and thoughts on the city and its neighborhoods. It'll give you a personal perspective and it mentions several local places you can check out.
