Taking a trip to Spain with the girlfriend, been reading a bunch of stuff but wanted to know any first hand experiences from you guys. Flying into Barcelona and for sure going to Madrid, Seville and San Sebastian but will take any advice or tips.

I'm sure you won't miss it, but the Alcazar in Seville is pretty dope. It's Dorne in Game of Thrones.

Also, the Cathedral is one of two places claiming to have Columbus' remains.

Do eat tapas at Vineria San Telmo and El Pasaje. Bodega Santa Cruz was on my list but were closed when I was there. The pizza place by the cathedral isn't that bad either. Only place open on new years.

I really liked Placa Real in Barcelona. Obviously see the Sagrada, buy your tickets online in advance for all the Gaudi sites.

Barcelona metro is real easy to use. If going to Parc Guel, enjoy the biggest set of back to back escalators you'll ever see.

Go eat at Taberna Alhambra in Madrid. Little hole in the wall next to our hostel but the food was great and the bartenders are fun. Got us fricked up on some free shots of some kind of "house liquor" they made.

Watch a bullfight. If I lived in Spain that would be my go-to sporting event.

If you weren't going to San Sebastian, I would say take a day trip to Costa Brava, and have a 3hr lunch at Restaurant Fiego. Then go bask in the sun.

As others said La Sagrada and Parc Guell are a must. Definitely get tickets early. Casa Mila (La Pedrera) was cool. Casa Batllo is worth passing by. Looking online, the inside seemed like Casa Mila. Stroll through Las Ramblas for open market shopping. Watch your wallet!

Had excellent tapas at Cervecieria Catalana. We also had an excellent meat at Senyor Parellada. I don't think it opened until 20:00, but that's fairly normal there.

The Cathedral is worth a visit. The gothic architecture across the city is spectacular.

We stayed at Alma Barcelona. It was very nice. Kind of expensive, but in a centralized location.

If your drunk late at night in Madrid go to el tigre. Buy a beer for 2 euro and get multiple plates of free food

In addition to those places already talked about, I liked El Escorial, Toledo, Segovia and Avila. I spent an entire day (from opening to closing) at the Prado Museum, but I'm into art.

I went to a futbol game at the big stadium in Madrid to see Real Madrid play against their rival Barcelona. The crowd was just as charged up as any SEC football game in Tiger Stadium. Very similar atmosphere.

I've been all over Europe and I find that the people in Spain (and Italy) are by far the most friendly.

If on a budget, take advantage of the daily lunch specials that the restaurants have in place. It is a tradition in Spain that restaurants put up multi-course meals at lunch for a set price, like 10 or 12 euro. It includes soup, main course, desert, and often bread and wine to accompany the meal. Several times, I got an entire bottle of wine for no extra charge!

I would also mention that prices in Spain are very reasonable right now since the economy is in very bad shape and the unemployment rate is above 20%.

This thread is full of good notes. San Sebastian - that whole region - is awesome. I went twice and for me it was just about being there. I didn't go to aquarium. I did bump around old town and beyond, afternoons at high tide jumping off rocks into clear pools. Tapas. Hiking up to the chapel/church for views back to town that were ridiculous, almost fake.

Random thought. If you're strictly going to Spain, from San Seb. you may want to consider a short train ride over to the French border at Hendaye, nearby beach towns. Really cool to get some French contrast, perhaps a Picasso museum, all in a day. Beaches were nicer in San Sebastián from my recollection.

If you have any questions about Barcelona I may be able to help. I just spent a week there April 10-17.
