For future reference:

What Islands have you been to?

What's your favorite Island? Why?

What did you do? Where did you stay?

Maui is the best island in my opinion but if you've never been to Pearl Harbor then I suggest you go to Oahu also.

It's nicer than you think . Kauai is the best, Maui second best. Favorite hotel Grand Hyatt Kauai . Best day trip- Power rafting off Napali Coast in Kauai. Second place- Hiking in Wamea Canyon in Kauai. Best place to dip out and drop off the grid - Kauai North Shore - Hanalei. Best Food- Honolulu. Worst food- Kauai. Best thing everybody does that they weren't expecting - eat shave ice every day.

I've only done Maui. I picked it because it seemed to be the best mix of all that makes the Hawaiian island chain so great - scenery, beaches, adventure, nightlife/food, tourist attractions, etc. Had a great time and would recommend it to everyone.

1. Kauai - Grand Hyatt
2. Big Island - Four Seasons Hualalai
3. Maui - Grand Wailea
4. Lanai to relax and do nothing but unwind. Take the
ferry to Maui.

I haven't been to Hawaii in 15 years, but 2 of my best friends say that grand Hyatt kauai is one of the nicest hotels they've ever been to (and they both travel a lot)

I liked them both, but I preferred the beaches on Oahu (I also spent a much longer time in Oahu)
quote:

What did you do?

Oahu

Hiked:
Pillboxes
Kokohead
Makapu'u Lighthouse

Beaches:
Kailua
Lanikai
Northshore
Bellows
Waikiki
Ko'Olina

Kauai

Hiked:
Na Pali coast (longest hike we did in Hawaii)

Beach:
Eastern coast, don't remember the name
quote:

Where did you stay?

Kailua on Oahu
Southeastern coast at some Marriott place

Kauai has more of an island feel to it, Oahu is more commercialized.

ETA: we also kayaked to the Moaks from Kailua beach on Oahu

Big Island: Fairmont
Oahu: some Sheraton near Waikiki
Maui: Fairmont, Grand Wailea, condos in Kihei/Wailea

Big Island was my first, and I'm glad it was because it's just otherworldly looking from the time you land. Oahu was good because of Pearl Harbor. Maui is obviously my favorite as I've been there the most. I just think it has the best mix of chill/restaurants/activities, and it feels like home to me. I've only stayed on the Wailea/Kihei side, but I don't feel the need to stay elsewhere.

I have not been to Kauai, but my husband has. He said it is beautiful, but Maui is still his favorite.

Worst mistake we made was trying to see too much in a week. We stayed on Maui, and experienced all that island had. We also hopped over to Oahu and tried to explore that island in one day. Was too much. Hawaii and San Francisco are the two locations I have been that surpassed expectations.

Flights are going cheap and we're considering making the trip the week leading up to Thanksgiving.

3-4 days on Oahu and another 3-4 on the big island. Sound about right?

Any must see items at either?

Considering the AirBnB route as opposed to hotels. Family of four, myself and the Missus plus a 10 and 5 year old.

That's an awful long trip for 7 days.
I'd do 3 days on Oahu...day 2 take a bus tour that includes Pearl Harbor.

Yep, it's a long trip for sure. We'd do 7 full days in Hawaii, so 9 days including travel.

With round trip airfare at $700 a ticket it feels hard to pass up. I need to make a decision soon.

Maui and Oahu
Maui out of the two
Stayed at Westin Maui, Hana tour, snorkeled Molokini and sea turtles
Pearl Harbor, Waikiki, North Shore

Did not have a lot of money for honeymoon but we went because I had frequent flyer miles I used from work, would love to go back and experience more and stay longer. Only problem with island hopping is dealing with the constant packing/unpacking scenario.
