Age 11 and 14 boys.
Thinking of leaving Wednesday evening, returning on Sunday.
Looking for best places to stay, looking at places in Times Square.
Trying to do one Broadway show, go to a Yankees game. As far as places, wife insists on Statue of Liberty. I would like to see the 9/11 memorial, Central Park and a couple other places that may be interesting to the kids.
Mainly would like to know best way to get around and best area to stay where we may can dine out by walking.

I'd put The Natural History Museum on your list and The Bronx Zoo. Piggyback the Yankees game with the zoo.

We went last year and stayed here. The Pearl
It was a great location near all the theaters etc. There is a great bar next door too. Rooms were larger than most ny hotels. It also near easy access to subways. There is a nice corner grocery near it too for snacks etc.
Take them to Vanderbilt One if you can.
My daughter loved Serendipity III for lunch and desserts.
I’ve heard you can just do the ferry ride to get a great view of the Statue.
The 911 museum is awesome but will take up most of a day.
Toloache is a good Mexican place near the theaters. Small so get reservations.

There is a Hampton Inn on 7th Avenue near Times Square that is pretty reasonable (for NYC) and the free breakfast is a big help with kids.
Almost too much to see in 4 days. My suggestions:
9/11
Ellis Island
The Met
Museum of Nat History

I think your list is pretty good. You're going to be tired after this trip
Broadway one night
Yankees day/night game
You can take the staten island ferry instead of going to the statue of liberty if that's all the wife wants to see
Central Park is cool to walk around but that won't be too long of a stop. Maybe add in the Met (5th Ave) as a stop, they had a cool mummy exhibit the last time I walked through
Downtown would be Chinatown (get the wife a cheap purse?), 9/11 Museum (I'd say this is a must do on your trip)
Weather forecast- Thursday pm storms, Friday thunderstorms. I'd save the museums and indoor activities for those days, do the ferry and outdoor stuff Thursday morning or Saturday/Sunday

Schedule a 90 min circle line cruise. They bring you very close to the Statue of Liberty.
Purchase tickets ahead of time for any museum you choose to visit to avoid lines.
We recently visited and had a great AirBnb in Murray Hill a few blocks from the Empire State Building. It was very convenient and comfortable and ranges from $400-650/night weekday versus weekends.

Saturday; Central Park, Empire State, Met and Broadway show if time permits it all
Friday: If weather permits will do Chinatown walking tour, and 9/11 Memorial/museum. Will take recommendations on what ever else we have time for from Concierge.
Staying at the Marriott Marquis on Broadway, so we may pop in and out on two shows. Depends on how the first one goes. Looking at using the lottery for tickets. Back to the Future, Lion King
Would like to have a meal that the kids will enjoy, so probably a good pizza joint. After that would like to grab lunch at a good deli and then maybe a good chinese place.

Definitely.
I was in NYC yesterday as part of a larger trip. Decided spur of the moment to go to Museum of Natural History since I hadn’t been in a while.
Walked in and the line was kind of long and moving very slow. After a few minutes I just said frick it and bought my ticket online while standing in line and walked on through.

Harbor Lights Cruise gets you a good look at the statue and shows off the skyline as it gets dark and the lights come on.
New York in a Day guided bus/boat tour was great. About $89 when we did it, and well worth it. Picks up near Times Square at 10 am, small group, good guide, and hits all the major highlights around town, including a boat ride to the Statute of Liberty. (Not those hop on tours that the touts in the square push.) You will never cover all that ground on your own. Finishes around 4 pm.

Thank you that is probably something we shoudl do with our Saturday, and I do like the idea of seeing the harbor and skyline in the evening.

John's of Time Square is a 3-4 min walk from your hotel. It isnt the absolute best NY pizza, but it is still very good and convenient to you. It is in an old church so it is a cool setting with a coal oven as well.

I like the food tours in NY. We've done the Meat Packing District and Greenwich Village. They give alot interesting information on the neighborhood and lots of good food. Last 3-4 hours but take you to some spots that you wouldn't find on your own.

We stayed in the Wall St. area last summer when we went and loved it. Busy during the day but quiet at night, which was perfect.
Subways are definitely the best way to get around. You can purchase a week pass for like $30 and it’s well worth it. Some people are afraid of the subways but I’ve never felt unsafe or had any issues. If you have an iPhone, it’ll give you subway directions (which train to take, which stops to get off, etc.)
Definitely do the 9/11 museum, it’s very well done. One World Observatory is also really great. Unless your wife wants to actually step foot on the island the Statue of Liberty is on, I would do the Staten Island ferry. It’s free and cruises right next to it. Skip the museum of natural history, it’s so old & outdated and last summer the only place that forced us to wear masks. The Met & MOMA are also good places to stop.

If you choose between MET and MOMA, I suggest the MET. I have kids of similar ages and they got much more out of the MET than MOMA. Also, Van Gogh's "Starry Night" is on loan from MOMA to the MET as they have a featured Van Gogh exhibit right now.
Your subway options are to get individual Unlimited cards for everyone or get the refillable metro cards. The unlimited ($30) card can only be swiped once every 18 minutes. A refillable card can be swiped multiple times meaning you wouldn't need a card for everyone in your group. Each swipe is $2.75. For us, I got 2 unlimited cards and 1 refillable. This allowed me to swipe for my youngest all trip.

You can use tap to pay from your phone or a card for the subways now. I also think there's some sort of deal where is you pay for x number of rides with the same card, you get y rides for free.

I agree with this (although I find the mask thing odd since I was not forced to wear one last time I went, which was Spring '22). It is sad that the Museum of Natural History is so outdated, but it really is.
Personally, I would skip the 9/11 memorial/museum. I just wouldn't want to put a damper on a vacation like that.

NY Pizza Suprema right by Madison Square Garden is our favorite spot.

Stay at Club Quarters Grand Central, puts you near the subway and a 10 minute walk from Times Square. Makes it extremely easy to hit Yankee Stadium, 9/11, Central Park, etc.
Skip the Harbor Cruise, honestly not worth it. You can do the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island tour which I recommend and then when you return walk down Broadway to hit the 9/11 Memorial.
Right now in Central Park they are doing different concerts as well which may be appealing for kids. Also the Rockafella Center is having a few family friendly adventures.
Also, you just need a CC that allows tap access and if you use it X amount of times a day they comp a ride. 2.75 a person per ride so be prepared for that but tap to pay is easy.
