I've used them several times for short flights.
They charge for everything but if you are away of that and understand how it works it isn't a bad experience.
Are they the best? No but when i can fly round trip to Dallas for 50 bucks I am all for it.

I've also never been delayed with them and I've used them on at least 15 different occassions. Planes are old and you don't have much room but that is only an issue if you are tall or fat.

From Houston that isn't a long flight. However, with Spirit if you wanted to bring a carry-on there is an additional charge, if you wanted a check-in another charge. I travel light in that I use a book sack and put enough clothes for 2-3 days in.

I want to say last time I booked a check-in bag was 14.99 each way, so about an additional 30 bucks. Some may be more, you can also pay to become a Spirit flyer and only pay 9.99 per bag.

You should be good on a flight to Chicago

If you know what you're getting into, Spirit is just fine. Most of the horror stories are from people who bought the cheap ticket and are "surprised" at all of the extra charges. I've flown with them numerous times from NOLA to Houston with no issues. I've only paid for baggage once. That was on a return flight during the Christmas holiday and I had a bag full of gifts. Also, I am pretty tall so I pay the extra $25 for the exit row seat. I always bring my own drinks and snacks on board so I don't need anything when I'm on the flight.

You are allowed one free personal item. Go to Costco and buy this $29 Ciao bag. This is your free personal item and it fits within their size dimensions. The bag itself fits a ton of stuff.

For that minimal of a difference, I'd fly UA.

A 60%+ increase isn't very minimal.

That flight is short enough and if I was just packing for a couple days, I would chose Spirit and save the cash.

$65 each way to have interline agreements, flexibility to carry-on a reasonable sized luggage item, and select my seat. That's basically what Spirit would charge you.

There's no real wrong answer here. I mean, so long as you don't fly Spirit, bring a carry on and check a bag.

Fly spirit and bring a personal item or upgrade and bring a carry on at no charge. All depends on how long I was going to be there and what I would be doing but I wouldn't spend more money to no fly Spirit for the option to take a bigger bag if I didn't need it and it's not worth the bump just to pick my own seat (to me at least).

Correct. I don't have any issue with Spirit. They serve a purpose in the market, but for $130...I'd stick with a legacy carrier with interline agreements.

I don't think I can make myself get on a plane that looks like a big banana.

Exactly. Spirit Airlines draws in customers that may not typically consider flying, or even traveling, period. They compete against ground transportation as much as other carriers. That's the way Southwest was in the 70's-early 2000's.

Don't do it unless you are really desperate to get the cheap flight, otherwise it is not worth the hassle. The planes are old as dirt, staff is rude, seats are small and don't recline, and they nickle and dime you every chance they get. Also they are super cheap, so attract people that usually won't fly the other carriers, think greyhound bus. It's really not worth the hassle to fly spirit over the other domestic carriers, and that's saying a lot.

Not true. They actually have one of the youngest fleets in the industry. Average 5.2 years, all Airbus A320 series.

Maybe it's just the planes out of Houston that are old. I flew from Fort Lauderdale to South America on spirt and the plane was new. Not much leg room but for $160, I dealt with it for 3.5 hours.

They put a few extra rows of seats on their planes. More passengers = cheaper fares

Delta actually has the largest number old planes still flying. Their MD-88's, 757, and 767's, many of which were delivered between 1987 and 1993. Their average overall fleet age is 17 years.

Other companies are going to start copying what Spirit does, I read awhile back that Delta will go with this type of model and offer three types of seats. First Class, Economy, and then a lower Economy where you pay for everything from bags, to seating preference, to snacks.

We fly Spirit often and have never had any issues. It can end up being a much cheaper option than other airlines. Pack smart, bring snacks, and don't choose first class or the exit row.
