I only have 5-6 days just in Spain. I've never been to Europe. Have a family member liking to relocate there and they invited me to hang out for the week they were just relaxing.
But I'm going to break away a bit too. There is some deal going on with the trains being cheaper than normal too.
Looks like most places are inexpensive. Round trip on American /BA only $650

So just taking a cheap trip. Madrid and Barcelona and Toledo are the places they said we must see.

I honestly wouldn’t spend too much time in Madrid. It’s an enormous “new city”. You won’t see a lot of “old” stuff. There are two amazing museums so if you love art you can do those. Also some great food. If that’s where your friend is located than that changed the algebra a bit and they can get you to a more local experience.

I think Barcelona and Seville are musts personally. 3 days in each would be great if you can swing it.

And just to be clear if you’re flying into Madrid then you can have a good time in Madrid. Great museums and great food.

It’s just not a favorite of mine at all personally.

Its tough to beat Barcelona. Several Antonio Gaudi houses/apts you can tour, Parc Guell and of course his Sangrada Familia cathederal which is amazing. Then there is great food, beaches and the Gothic Quarter that you can get lost in. Barcelona is also, surprisingly, one of the top cities for craft beer in Europe. We are headed to the Basque country (San Sebastian) next summer which is another great area of spain.

The 3 cities you mentioned are great.
Toledo just needs a full day, but it's pretty amazing.

Madrid has some great eat and drink spots. And madrid was cheap.
As mentioned, the art museum there is fantastic. There is one day where it's free but ya gotta get in line early.

Barcelona is beautiful. The Gothic section is cool. Gaudi houses and basilica are amazing.

Let me go back through my maps and I'll come list the places I liked to eat and drink

The medieval part of Toledo was amazing. Be prepared. It is not flat. Flip flops won’t work.

Seville is a great city and you can do a day trip to Ronda from there. I’d do Ronda over Gibraltar 100% of the time.

I agree with this. Stay in Barcelona the whole time and see all the Gaudi sites.
We stayed in El Born which is the neighborhood right next to the Gothic Quarter. Lot’s to do and see and many great restaurants.

Few days in BCN, few days in Basque Country. Madrid isn't bad but has no soul compared to Bcn.

Eat at Barra Alta, my favorite underrated spot, and Bar Del Pla, my favorite "not a tourist trap" in old town. The subway is clean and efficient. I'm a big fan of the low key niceness of Gracia and the openly plush Eixample neighborhoods. Old town gets old fast, the Gatlinburg of Spain sort of.

Basque Country is a very sleepy region with great wine and cheese. St. Sebastien is a great seaside medium-size place.

I will note that of all the places we visited in Spain Barcelona was by far the most expensive.

Same opinion as everyone else in this thread. You can do Madrid in a day or two, but it’s just a big metropolitan city imo. It doesn’t come close to Barcelona.

I have some friends in BCN and that's how I came to like the place. I suppose if my friends were in Madrid I'd like it better. A town is really what you can make out of it. If you can find any hole-in-wall bars or music spots, amazing family restaurants, etc...

While there is some truth to that obviously...

Madrid is one of the largest cities in Europe but isn't a prime tourist destination and really doesn't want to be. It doesn't have the "old stuff" that other cities have for the most part. Its cathedral was build in the early 1990's.

GREAT museums, great restaurants but thats about it. I also did not find the people in Madrid to be as nice as other parts of Spain. Its just not a tourist city at its heart.

Madrid did have the biggest and best Mercado (Mercado San Miguel) that I saw in any city in Spain. It was spectacular and the tapas scene in Madrid is also wonderful.

I did also find, weirdly, that not as many people spoke English in Madrid as in Barcelona or Seville. That is not their fault, its THEIR country so don't take it the wrong way, its just something a tourist needs to know.

Obviously many many still did.

But I looked that up afterwards and it is a thing. Because Madrid is the center of Spain and not focused on tourism, there are less English speakers per capita, allegedly.

True but I will say that in Barcelona a cabby said to me "don't speak English, speak Spanish". He was one rude fricker. Fortunately, my wife is 1/2 Cuban and fluent in Spanish.

They may also speak Catalan in Barcelona and forget about trying to speak or understand that shite.

Got an airbnb in the medieval part of Toledo. It was built in the 1380's. Renovated last year though. Only the walls in one bedroom are from 1380 now.
Still pretty cool.

I screwed up. I booked a round trip flight. But we are ending up in Barcelona my last day. I should fly from Barcelona to London. Instead I have Madrid. 2.5 hour train or 1.5 flight.

I watch videos of walks through European cities and landscapes. Spain has by far the best looking women of them all. Also Spanish beach walk videos are legit.

My first trip to Europe will be spain. Glad this thread was started I need some tips.
