Southwest Christmas Cancellations Year 2

Hopefully no one on here got stuck tonight trying to get in/out of Chicago Midway. The airport is fogged in and they don't have CAT II/III instrument landing systems so a ton of flights diverted to St. Louis, Kansas City, and Nashville. So far 132 flights cancelled and 1241 flights delayed. Curious to see how they recover tomorrow (fog expected until the middle of the day) given last years Christmas fiasco. If anyone needs help rebooking, myself and others will be on here to help

Well the last flight to land was at 603pm yesterday 12/23. Looks like there's a bunch of planes circling trying to land this morning but it must still be foggy in Chicago as all inbounds are held until 830am
59 cancellations and 265 delays today
Just watched a flight from Omaha and one from DCA try to land at MDW, they went back up in the air

Why do people set themselves up for this. Everyone knows the weather terrible in the winter and they act surprised when flights get cancelled. I'm pretty sure Southwest was not the only company cancelling.

This doesn’t look to be a SW problem surprisingly… at least at this point.
Now let’s wait and see how they handle the downstream implications of the weather. That’s where they can really F it up like last year.

Well since Chicago midway pretty exclusively is home to southwest (there's 3 delta flights a day), it's mostly a SW problem. Only 4 flights have landed this morning and nothing has taken off besides a Delta flight to Atlanta that left at 6am that came in yesterday.

This is what I'm waiting to see. I've seen a few downstream cancellations already including a Vegas to Sacramento flight, Tampa to buffalo, etc. Crews are likely out of place already and that's not including the diverted flights from this morning that couldn't make it in

How is Southwest Airlines to blame for the FAA cancelling flights from bad fog?
Posted on 12/24/23 at 10:40 am to HoustonGumbeauxGuy
FAA isn't cancelling flights, southwest is. FAA imposes limits on the number of flights that can arrive/depart from a given airport for certain conditions like snow, fog, ice, or thunderstorms. Southwest could delay all their flights by 6, 12, or 24 hours until the fog clears so they at least operate (similar to what delta does) but they are choosing to cancel likely to have a shot at getting crews used for other flights.
This is a legitimate weather event, but last year southwest used the 'weather' excuse to shite the bed operationally for 5-7 days leaving tons of customers stranded. Most of us on here are curious/concerned to see how they learned from last year and if any changes they made actually improve their recovery operations. Would you book a southwest Christmas flight?

Ya, as someone who got caught up in all that last year (woof), they weren't the only airline that canceled flights due to weather, but they were the only airline who couldn't get their head out of their arse for a week,
I'm flying tomorrow but not SW. Not necessarily because of last year, but it definitely was on my mind.

Once you have an experience like you and others on here had last year, it's tough to get over it. Delta had their own issues last Christmas but still managed to shite the bed less than Southwest. Hopefully this is a small blip in the radar but lots of people are watching this event unfold

I would not book any Christmas flight on the east coast.

I got lucky I suppose compared to others. Took many hours, but secured a rental car to drive 10 hours to ATL with my 4 and 1 year old to catch my second segment to home.
I will say the restitution from SW was quick, painless and more than fair.

I don't know why anyone still flys WN around the holidays. This seems to happen every year and because of they way their operation is structured it compounds the issue.

Probably a way to gain from the chaos. Get some $$$ or free flight vouchers.

Just did this year without issue.

Southwest runs a point to point operation instead of the traditional hub and spoke model. While a American, Delta, and United plane will typically fly back and forth from the same hub, a Southwest plane may touch both coasts in a single day.
Other airlines can isolate weather incidents to the affected hubs and minimize disruptions elsewhere while Southwest can't.
