I'm looking at pulling together a last minute trip to the Smokies for Labor Day weekend since the forecast for the beach isn't looking great. I'm familiar with Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, and really I'm not opposed to them, but I wouldn't mind staying away from those crowds for the most part either. Any other towns with good access would probably be preferable. Access to the park is really our primary concern.

Townsend is nice, but pretty close to Pigeon Forge. Not sure how much of the Labor Day crowd will spill that way.

I fly fish in the Little River at Townsend a fair amount. That's a very nice little town nestled south of Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg.

Correct answer IMO

You can get into the park via Little River Gorge Road, and get to Cade's Cove via Laurel Creek Road.
Those roads are some of the prettiest drives in the park.
You'll be way ahead of the traffic in the mornings.

If you want something different, look on the other side of the mountains. Look in Highlands, NC and the surrounding area. Lots to do over there as well without the redneck riviera feel.

Be nice to have the park back soon, before the annoying arse leaf peepers show up.

I've been staying in the Cashiers/Sapphire area a lot lately. Lots of good fly fishing in that area and the little towns around there are neat. Brevard and Highlands are cool. Lots of really good non chain food joints. Franklin has one of my favorite places to eat. Lots of interesting hike not in the park. Far less of the really annoying tourists. The park is just getting more and more crowded and having to go deeper and deeper in to escape it.

thats the area I like. It should be less crowded than Pigeon but Labor Day everything will be somewhat crowded.
