Seattle- Things to Do
Posted on 7/8/16 at 3:55 pm

I will be in Seattle for a couple of weeks and have done the more touristy things on my last trip. There will be random days that I will have free and will be looking for things to do by myself for a few hours.
Specifically, I am looking for "easy" day hikes ie Snow Lake, lunch spots, trips to islands, sailing companies, etc. Also, into music so any ideas for venues with local or national acts would also be appreciated.

Grab a steak at the Metropolitan Grille on 2nd ave, or El Gaucho in Belletown on 1st. The EMP for music is recommended. There's plenty of Kayak companies on Lake Union if you're looking at getting out on the water to explore around Fremont and the Ballard locks. If you're into sports or soccer, I'd recommend checking out a Sounders game. There's a ton on breweries here too. My personal fav is the Fremont Brewing Company. If you're in you late twenties or thirties, Ballard is the place for nighlife.

I second Fremont. If you have entire days, then Poulsbo and the Olympic Peninsula are both good options. Port Townsend is beautiful and has lots of good restaurant options on the the Olympic Peninsula. Paulsbo is a quaint Nordic town.

Consider taking a music tour. I did Stalking Seattle and it was a lot of fun. The one venue I went to was the Crocodile. Mainly for the tshirt.

I'll be staying in Magnolia, so not too far from Ballard. I'll check out the brewery and can't believe I didn't think of kayaking, good call.

There are tons of good restaurants and bars in Ballard. Depending on where you are in Magnolia, you can actually walk across the locks to Ballard.
Also, if you're looking for hikes you should check out Wallace Falls and Mt Pilchuck

The Met is alright. If anything it's gotten more expensive over the years and that's what pisses people off the most. The happy hour is very legit however.
El Gaucho for sure if you're looking to impress the lady. Dark, quaintly, with a 50's old steakhouse vibe to it.

Also heading to Seattle soon for a few days in August. First time there so will probably check the major tourist attractions and then will just be looking to walk around some cool neighborhoods and eat some good food. Any recs for me that don't apply to the OP or haven't been mentioned yet?
ETA: mid-20s and going with wife
ETA2: Looking at Altura, Art of the Table and Canlis as some potential dinner options (also would probably want to do sushi somewhere as well)

Canlis is overrated. I'd avoid at all costs. Instead, Daniels Broiler on Lake Union is the better alternative. For sushi I'd go with Tsukushinbo in the international district. You won't be disappointed. You gotta check out Ballard and Fremont to walk around taste some appetizers and drink. It fun!!

We loved Ballard and we ended up there after visiting the locks. We got lucky and went to some cool bars!

If you have a day and a passport, take the ferry to Victoria.

Oh yes! Butchart Gardens is one of the most beautiful places I've seen!

I will be in Victoria for one day. How long should I set aside to see Buchart Gardens. TIA

You left out, if you have a DUI they won't let you into Canada. It's considered a felony in Canada.

This is contrary to what most people say, but I would not do the gardens if you only have one day. The gardens are impressive but you need at least three hour (given the bus ride this is probably the bare minimum you would need).
I loved Victoria. Just walking around. Tea at the empress. Lots of pubs. Good eats. The lights at night. Water taxi. If I only had one day there, I would skip the gardens. But I'll note again, most people would disagree.

I will be staying overnight and the Buchart Gardens was one of the places I wanted to see. I will be taking rental car across ferry in morning and returning to states the net morning. Was planning about 3 hours at the gardens when I first get across and spend time walking around the city that afternoon and night. Any suggestions on a good place to eat dinner and food that is unique to that area would be appreciated. I will be spending a week around Seattle and would like to get some smoked salmon and Dungeness crabs and may try to get one of them in Victoria.

Search Victoria on the board. I remember a thread with lots of info when planning my trip.
I was there two nights. One night dinner was basically a late tea at the empress. Expensive but very nice. If up to me (it wasn't), I might just do a happy hour there.
The other night we had dinner at an Italian place with thin crust pizza. I'll try to find the name but doesn't seem like what you are looking for.
Lots of pubs. Bard and Banker was very nice. The other I enjoyed was right off the water.
Great town to walk around, pop in here or there. I wish we had another day there.
Gardens were impressive. Probably an hour there and back. At least two to see most of the garden. Could easily spend 3-4.
Lots of people on this board with info. I'm sure they'll weigh in.

I'll be in Seattle on vacation for 2 1/2 days. Will most likely hit up the touristy stuff the first day. Will be visiting the Ballard area too. Any restaurants and brewery recommendations not listed above? Not really looking for high end restaurants. Thanks!
