This will be my third time going to Rome and Tuscany so I want to get a solid thread going that hopefully we can add to a sticky. It's a popular trip so we can amass some good resources.

We land at FCO on Dec 24th and fly out on Jan 4th, which gives us about 10 days. We are planning to do 4 days in Rome, 4 days in Florence, then 2 days in Siena. We have already done most of the museums so we are going to be primarily focused on the food/wine scene.

Because of the holidays, a lot of the small B&B places throughout Tuscany are closed so we are going to stick to the cities and make day trips out.

We are making day trips to Sant'Angelo in Colle and Montepulciano to check out some restaurants and a vineyard. There are also some hot baths at Bagno Vignoni we are going to check out.

Don't stay in sienna. Stay around Gaiole in Chianti or Greve. On St John. Will post more when I return.

Why? I've stayed there before and enjoyed it. What's better about those other places?

I concur with VABuckeye. I was in both Siena and Greve in Chianti just last week. Siena is too city like. When you're in Siena you don't even really feel like you're in Tuscany. I can't recommend Greve enough. You can also stay in Orvieto or Cortana. All three are hill towns and are in order of size. Greve has the most small Tuscany hill town feel.

For your drive from Rome to Florence, don't take the highway. We took the scenic route known called Chiantigiana. It was extremely beautiful. Closer to Rome it'll start in the Umbria then change to the Tuscan country about 30 mins in. Highly recommended road trip.

Also see if you can check out Arezzo. Another small town in Tuscany. But imo Greve, Orvieto, Cortana were the coolest in that order.

ETA: I think 4 days in Florence is too much. 3 should be good enough but really 2-2.5 is perfect. I would do a day trip to Amalfi instead

Orvieto is awesome. I guess I will take a look at staying at some of the smaller towns.

I was leaning towards the cities because of the dates. My buddy and his wife did a trip to Tuscany last Christmas/New Years and said that tons of stuff was closed.

So maybe:

4 days in Rome
3 days in Florence (start driving south on last day)
3 days traveling between smaller towns

Go eat at La Rigola in the Jewish Ghetto in Rome (check Elizabeth Minchilli's blog for some other good Rome food/drink recs)

Eat at Acquacotta and Trattoria Gargani in Florence - both are very good.

Great trip. We have been to Tuscany twice. The first time we stayed in Florence. The 2nd time we stayed in the B&B section of a villa in the middle of the vineyards in the Tuscan hills. We stayed for a week and with a rental car we were able to explore the small Tuscan towns. That was a fantastic trip. Our villa was out in the middle of nowhere but it was near the town of San Donato which is south of Florence and north of Siena. Our favorite restaurant in Siena was Antica Osteria Da Divo just down the street from the Doumo's Baptistry. The food is delicious and the restaurant is built in an old Etruscan cave.

I'm following this thread. I picked Rome and Florence to wrap up my trip this fall... on a whim, not sure why. Never been before. Kind of lost on what to do when I get there. Will have approx 6 days to do both places.

We are doing 3 nights in each. Staying right across the river from Trastavere in Rome, then we have a nice apartment for 3 nights in Florence.

That gives us 4 days for Tuscany, then 1 final night somewhere near FCO since we have an early flight.

Anyone have any other recommendations in Tuscany? My list is massive and I have to start narrowing it down.

What do you like? A lot of the small towns have only one restaurant and every one we ate at was very good. Are you into wine? The enoteca in Greve is fantastic. Of course, there are tons of choices among wineries. Castello Ricasoli is beautiful and they have some great wine including the Brolio and a very nice Brunello.

La Grotta della Rana is a fantastic restaurant in San Sano which is close to Gaiole in Chianti. If you go get the wild boar and the lemon dessert. It's lemon sorbet served in a frozen half of the largest lemon I've ever seen and it was sublime.

That looks awesome. The main purpose of our trip is food and wine so we will check out those places.

Right now we have 4 days in between Florence and Rome to explore. Thinking Greve, Cortona, Arrezzo, Orvieto. Night 2 is New Years so we are trying to find something fun to do that night.

Enjoy. I'm plotting a way to get a trip to Italy sometime in 2017. We're going with a group of friends in September 2018 but that's too long for me to wait. I really want to go for the Chianti Classico Tuscan Wine Festival in Greve in September.

If you're going to be in Tuscany be sure to go to the southern portion and visit Montalcino (where Brunello di Montalcino comes from) and Montepulciano. Montepulciano is a gorgeous town IMO.

We plan on covering a lot of ground since we have a rental car. Just need to find places to stay and then we can make day trips all over. Definitely want to see Montepulciano and Montalcino.

I'm on my way to Florence and Monterosso in the Cinque Terre for wedding/honeymoon right now.

We looked at Rome, Amalfi, Florence, and Milan pretty seriously before deciding on our route. In reality, fiancée picked this part of our trip but I'm glad she did. Looking forward to it.

Thanks

Florence to Monterosso was her pick.

I picked up from there and chose Nice and Barcelona. We have midfield tickets for Barcelona v. Real Betis at Camp Nou on Saturday, Aug. 20th
Besides getting married, I'm more excited for that than anything else. Drinking a metric shite-ton of wine with her across the coast will be fun too.
