Leave MSY in the evening and try to sleep on the plane. Arrive in the morning in Europe and enjoy your day. Even if you don't sleep much on the plane, just try to power through. If you fall asleep when you get to the room you can go ahead and scratch that day off the itinerary
I'm sure it varies by age, but this works for me. Even when I only manage an hour or two on the plane, if you power through and go to bed at a half decent hour (I think we made it to 9:30 or so the last time I went) you're good to go.
You may drag a little the following day, but I never feel truly jet lagged when it's set up like that.

Yep, that's the schedule for me too. Earliest possible arrival....eat before you get on the plane, decline the terrible plane food & use an eye mask & noise cancelling headphones to get some sleep. Even 2 hrs, broken up, is better than nothing. Upon arrival, get straight outside to walk & sightsee. Eat on the local schedule, whatever meal should come next. Drink the local caffeine after lunch (coffee, tea) and stay awake as long as possible. Go out for a stroll after an early-ish dinner, weather permitting. Go to bed at a decent hour & sleep until you naturally wake up. It works for me.
A small afternoon nap (45 minutes or so) can help you make it to dinner if the flight was completely sleepless. Moving around as much as possible in natural light will really help to reset the clock.

I also highly recommend starting your time change prep the morning of the day of your flight before the actual flight. I can't recommend enough getting some exercise the day of your flight, so that you aren't antsy on the flight. For most people the exercise will also help you sleep better. I also try and get up earlier than normal as that's closer to Europe time. I've gotten up at 4:30 for European flights before, gotten in a run or a short workout, then got some stuff done before going to the airport.
That really helps me have a better flight which in turns helps your first two days abroad.
