Regarding jet lag (MSY -> Europe), better to arrive in the morning or afternoon?

Looking at flights, would it be better to arrive in the morning and sleep to recover or to arrive in the afternoon/night? Last time I went (20 years), I don't remember what time we got there but I stayed up as long as possible then slept for 24 hours straight. I would like to try to do something different to maximize my time there and not crash for 24hours! I also think I stayed up the whole flight last time which is probably not preferred.

It's all about how you feel your body will adjust and how well you feel you can sleep on a plane. I've personally never had much of an issue sleeping on the plane, so I prefer night so I can knock out for 7 hours and just be ready to go the next day when I arrive.

Leave MSY in the evening and try to sleep on the plane. Arrive in the morning in Europe and enjoy your day. Even if you don't sleep much on the plane, just try to power through. If you fall asleep when you get to the room you can go ahead and scratch that day off the itinerary

agreed...drop your stuff off and start walking. It will get you acclimated quicker.

And crash that night a little earlier.

I can never sleep on a plane, but still prefer to arrive in the morning. Power through and then sleep like a rock.

Last time I was in Europe I crashed in the afternoon. Ended up napping every afternoon for the whole week. We were in Spain so I figured it kinda worked out

Unless you are taking a connecting flight, most flights arrive in the morning from the USA before 10am?

I'm not a fan of napping simply because I never trust myself to both wake up and then feel decent enough after a crappy nap to do anything that day. I love to walk around, grab some expressos, then eat a big dinner with a couple beers and pass the heck out usually around 8:30-9. This usually gets me to sleep until around 5am.

I could see some situations where taking a nap and then staying up past 10 or 11 would make sense, I just can't see myself doing it.

No, I agree it's a terrible idea. OP should definitely stay awake.

Flights I'm looking at:
Msy to Rome: depart at 2pm, arrive and 9:30am the next day. 12.5h total
Venice to msy: depart at 8am, arrive at 5pm. 16h total

Should be good with those, right?

I'd take the Rome flight. Or whichever of those two has a longer layover. Best to give yourself some time between flights in case anything happens. Think we did a 5 hour layover in Newark last May when we did MSY to Milan

The two I posted are round trip.

First has one stop in Charlotte for 1:10
Second has a stop in London for 1:50 and charlotte for 1:30.

Can you even arrive in Europe in the afternoon/evening? General rule is travel east overnight, sleep as much as you can on the plane, power through that first day.

yes but it appears to be pieced together flights to get the lowest price.

I'd take the latest overnight flight possible to try to sleep. Still, we were wiped out the next afternoon and slept. We walked around in the morning, had lunch then slept and woke up for dinner and walked around in the evening. The next day we were on a regular schedule.

Yes, I used to do a lot of work in London, and United for example has flights that leave early in the morning, so you get in at night and immediately go to bed.

To me, it was ok, but you obviously sleep like crap. The only advantage was that you woke up in a bed and did not have to deal with the airport in the morning. Take a shower and there you go.

I would just recommend not sleeping until at least 10pm local time. So whether you arrive in the morning or afternoon, try to power through until nighttime.

You will wake up the next day relatively used to the new time.

My preference has always been to arrive early afternoon. You can power through til sundown, go to sleep then wake up in the morning (local time). It's not going to completely eliminate jet lag but it sure does help a lot.
