Refund or Credit on an Airline Ticket

I made the decision to book a flight through cheaptickets.com. Big mistake I know. I no longer can use the flight due to an emergency at work. I called cheaptickets to see about a refund, change the flight to another day or a credit. They told me the flight was non-refundable, cannot get a credit and it would cost just as much as I paid to change it to another day on the first leg and the second leg is unchangeable. Since it is through cheaptickets.com, I booked united to get there and Delta for the return. $500 flight. Any suggestions? Could I dispute this with my CC company?

Did you use a credit card like chase sapphire that has travel protection?

You certainly could try disputing it but I doubt you'll have any luck doing so as the purchase was clearly advertised as non-refundable (or that there would be a penalty for itinerary change).

I'd try to negotiate with cheaptickets.com on a schedule change to salvage something from the transaction, I've dealt with them a couple of times. Try to (nicely) get to a supervisor at cheaptickets when negotiating, they'll have more latitude than the first operator/CSR you speak to when calling into them. Cheaptickets wants return business and can possibly soften the penalty.

tl/dr: Your probably screwed but try to negotiate.

Good luck.

Cheaptickets is just the OTA and has no power in this matter. It is the airline that makes the rules on a particular ticket based on the fare basis. Disputing it with your CC won't help either because you committed to the outlined rules while buying the ticket.

Your best option is to read United and delta's cancellation policy on non refundable tickets due to emergencies. They make exceptions for a few things like involuntary unemployment, death etc. See if any of those apply to you. Secondly, look at your credit cards (which you used to purchase) trip cancellation insurance policy. Again, these are limited to very few, very dire circumstances.

I'm afraid you either have to take the trip or the loss most likely. But don't blame cheaptickets for it.

This.

OP's story is why in nearly every situation I tell people not to book airfare or hotels from 3rd party sites. And if you must book with a 3rd party for airfare, avoid outbound/return trips with separate airlines.

If the OP had one airline for the round trip, they should be able to cancel the flight less $200 cancellation fee. Now they're out $200 cancellation fee for each direction.

Furthermore, I have noticed that airfare at any OTA is 99.9% times the same price as you would find at the airline's website (for the same fare basis). This is why I use ITA matrix to find tickets then book directly with the airline. It is much easier to deal with problems, especially IRROPS, if you have purchased the ticket directly.
