My wife and I are going to Hawaii at the end of this year. Deciding between Maui and a few resorts on Big Island. Any suggestions?

Stayed at Westin Maui, within walking distance of restaurants, luaus, etc.
Close by is Lahaina, Kimo's right on the water.

Cheaper way to stay in Hawaii is bed and breakfasts but you may not have all the luxuries a hotel can provide.

Maui has snorkel trips to Molokini and snorkel with the sea turtles and whale watching if right time of year.

Road to Hana, has tours or you can drive it yourself, waterfalls to stop at, winery at the end of the tour.

We took a Aloha Airlines flight to Oahu one day for Pearl Harbor, Waikiki and North Shore.

Kona is very popular too and I know several that have stayed on Kona, but we did not do the Big Island.

Big island is awesome!

Definitely go to the volcano national park, some great hiking. See the lava tubes.

Drive up to the Maunea Kea observatory to watch the sunset and see the stars better than anywhere else in the world. Just bring a jacket, not unusual to see snow.

Suisan Fish Market for poke. The best on any island.

Hawaii tropical botanical gardens near Hilo is pretty amazing down near the water. Steep incline so be prepared to walk.

On Maui make sure you get the shaved ice at Ululani, it includes ice cream. Shaved ice will be ruined for you after that.

Eskimo Candy poke... Always eat poke when you can.

Makena has a great spot to snorkel with sea turtles. Just know they have a few shark attacks out there.

Check out big Beach and little Beach, lots of locals there.

Everyone else covered most of the Maui stuff

Maui is a crowded tourist trap. If you must go, Four Seasons or Grand Wailea. Kauai Grand Hyatt or the Big Island Waikoloa Hilton or Four Seasons.
No matter where you go, get some Lapperts Ice Cream...Kauai Pie.

Shave Ice*

To the OP, Kauai was amazing, is there a reason that you aren't considering it?

My wife and I are planning to go to Maui in 2018 when Auburn plays in the Maui Invitational so I've been periodically looking at flights for the same time period this November to get an idea of costs. One thing I'm seeing is that most return flights have us leaving Maui middle of the day and not getting home until middle of the morning the next day. I know gaining a few hours is a factor in that but is this normal or is there a way to catch a morning flight out of Maui that would get to back to the south(Birmingham specifically) that same night?

We flew out of Maui at 9pm, landed in LA at like 5 am and was back in NOLA that evening.

We flew United (which I would never recommend) but that schedule is an option.

Delta had a flight plan that took us through LA and got us back in a day. 8 AM flight out of Honolulu and landed in NOLA by 10:30 PM.

More options if you fly out of HNL rather than OGG.

That was one of the coolest things I've ever done. I could see satellites orbiting the earth at 17000 mph. The whole island uses yellow street lights not to light pollute the observatory

Aulani is awesome. Share a beach with the four seasons. 40 minutes outside of Honolulu close to Kapalua. Ko Olina golf right across the street. And the resort is amazing. Spa is worth the expense. Restaurants are top notch. And there are multiple pools, slides, and even a lazy river.

We loved it and will gladly go back. If anyone wants pics, I'll be happy to share.

Maui is awesome. Helicopter tour, snorkeling, drove the road to Hana. Lahaina is a great little town.
