As per the title, I will be in Paris (France you heathens, not TX) in Sept. Can anyone give me some fine dining and / or off the beaten path local recommendations for lunch and dinner.

FWIW, I loathe "touristy" places a la on top of the Eiffel Tower even if it is great.

Le train bleu was REALLY good. Reasonably priced for how nice it was. The most beautiful restaurant I’d ever eaten in as well. Felt like I was eating in the Sistine Chapel or something.

Had the veal. Wife got roast leg of lamb. Ordered an assortment of cheeses for a starter. Food was top notch. Great server helped a redneck like me decide on cheeses which were sliced at our table. Brilliant atmosphere. We didn’t drink and came out for like 120ish euro after tip.

L'Atlas was a good place I ate at when I visited Paris. The escargot was amazing and they had some very good seafood.

Staying near the Eiffel Tower. Good. One of my favorite restaurant rows in Paris is in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, rue St. Dominique. There are dozens of great restaurants on or just off of that street. Here are a few:

Au Bon Accueil is a great little gourmet bistro a few blocks away. Same with Chez L'Ami Jean which is livelier and more casual.
La Fontaine de Mars is very good and is open on Sunday night.
Josephine Chez Dumonnet, another excellent traditional bistro, is near the other end of rue Cler from there.
ETA as mentioned below, Violon d'Ingres bay be the best of the best on rue St, Dominique.
You mentioned fine dining.
If you want real fine dining, my favorite restaurant in the world is Guy Savoy. It is super expensive at night, but they have lunch specials. Same with Le Cinq in Hotel George V just off the Champs ELysees.
Le Train Bleu was mentioned above as being a beautiful restaurant. That is true. I didn't have a meal there, but we found ourselves in the Gare de Lyon one day in the late afternoon after catching the train back from Fountainbleau and decided to go in for a drink just to soak in the ambiance. It is an incredibly beautiful restaurant in an otherwise nondescript train station.

. The most beautiful restaurant I have ever been to is Le Grand Vefour. That also falls into the category of being much cheaper for lunch. We sat at Napoleon and Josephine's table. It was a great experience.

We are scheduled to go back to Paris next spring. I can't wait.

Went to Violon d'Ingres in March this year. Might be the best meal of my life. One Michelin star french bistro close to Eiffel tower. Chef is from Normandy area, so the cuisine matches that area.

Get a later reservation if you want it to feel more local. We had one towards the middle of dinner service. First walked in it was all tourist (which made me feel the place was suspect at first) but as they left the tables turned into more French customers.

Ciel de Paris

From Bing AI:

quote:

The restaurant you are referring to is Le Ciel de Paris which is located on the 56th floor of the Montparnasse Tower. It is considered the highest panoramic restaurant in Paris and offers a breathtaking view of the city. You can enjoy flavourful, imaginative, seasonal cuisine while having lunch or dinner at the restaurant in Montparnasse Tower which creates long-lasting memories. For an even more exceptional experience at the Montparnasse Tower restaurant, book a table near the windows. Reservations can be made by calling +33 (0)1 40 64 77 641.

Chez Monsieur

Just got back from Paris earlier this week and went here. We stayed in the Madeleine area so it was nearby. Everyone enjoyed it, would definitely recommend.

While not fine dining, an off the beaten path place that was recommended to us was Chez Janou. Unfortunately we didn’t make it, but got great reviews. It’s in the area north east of Notre Dame.

Great recs throughout. Haven’t been in years but really loved the following spots:

Chez Michel - awesome little spot. Normandy influenced bistro.
Regis Huiterie - if you like oysters, prawns, or sea urchin, this is a temple to the sublime pleasure of simple seafood. Muscadet, bread, butter, platters of oysters. You are set.
Da Rosa - snack type place. Charcuterie, cheese and the like. Near Eiffel Tower.
L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon (he has since passed) but very much worth a visit.

Robert et Louise was fantastic! We ate at several restaurants on our trip to Paris a few years ago and I’ll never forget the duck confit and green beans.
