Hey everyone

I am planning to do a trip with the wife next month to Boston since we've never been. We are doing the whole Boston touristy stuff plus a Sox/Yankee game, but we were thinking of doing an overnight trip for a day or two to somewhere nearby.

The problem is the possibilities are endless and i dont know which one to pick if i just picked one?

Any recommendations are appreciated. We would land around 2pm on a Tuesday and the plan would be to get a car and head somewhere and stay until late Wednesday then head back to Boston.

Considering(although im curious to know if these are even doable)

Portland
Cape Code
MV

The easiest would be Portland, followed by the Cape, and lastly Martha's Vineyard.

Portland is the only one of the three that can be done in a day. It's about an hour and a half drive each way, so very doable.

Without looking, I'd also say Portland would be the cheapest in terms of booking a place to stay overnight. It's a great town with a lot of great breweries. I'll actually be there next weekend.

Edit: Looking at when you'd land in Boston, I'd say the Cape and MV are out. By the time you get there, it'd likely be 7pm or later, because you'd definitely hit lots of traffic getting out of Boston. That would only give you a morning to see the Cape or MV, and I don't think eating into a day and a half of your trip to see a tiny bit of what either would offer makes any sense. But that's just my opinion.

How would the traffic be heading up to Portland?

Traffic getting out of Boston won't be great, but shouldn't be too bad at all after that.

If you're landing at 2pm, by the time you get off the plane, get your luggage, get to the car rental place, and get your car, it'll be 3pm at least.

Unfortunately, traffic starts picking up around then. You may be able to get out right before it picks up, but odds are it'll be busy on 93 North until you get to 95. I'd guess it would be a two hour drive to Portland.

Ok sounds good. if i choose that route, what is their to see and do other than the breweries(which i will be seeing)?

Curious if there is anything to stop at along the way? i was looking forward to going to the Cape and seeing Plymouth Rock, etc.

Plenty of trails for hiking, or you could catch a Portland Sea Dogs (minor league) game if they're playing.

Frankly, I usually just go up there on day trips to hit up the breweries and restaurants.

So is going to Portland is much better than driving to Providence?

I do think its cool to drive along the northern coast and go through NH. cant imagine another time id get to see those states.

Providence, RI?

I would definitely pick Portland over Providence...Providence is actually a kind of crappy place.

However, if you're thinking RI, Newport is an awesome little town along the coast that can be visited in a day.

I would say Portland and/or Newport RI

A lot of things you could do on way/back to Portland as well.

Day trip to MV is too hard because you have to get to Cape Cod and ferry to MV which takes some time.

Please elaborate.

Also, looking for any hole in the wall seafood joints in Boston that won't break the bank to give us a taste of some chowder and/or lobster.

I know it's a tourist trap but I love history and ghost stuff so I'm doing a Salem night tour for sure.

Any recs on that?

There are very few "cheap" restaurants in Boston. If you're looking for cheaper lobster, try and get that done while you're in Portland or one of the places you stop at along the way.

We went to Dimillos for lunch in Portland. It was quite good. I would skip the trolley and lighthouse tour as they were boring imho unless that's really your thing.
