Headed to Munich-Oktoberfest for a bro trip (all in our early 30s) and then ending the trip in Paris with 2 days to spend in a 3rd city before Paris. Any recommendations? Cities thrown around in our group so far have been Barcelona, Copenhagen, Budapest, and Amsterdam. Maybe Prague? Definitely want to take advantage of the nightlife. Also, any day trips worth making from Munich? Was looking at Kufstein for example. Thanks for the help.

Salzburg is an easy train trip from Munich. Worth some time IMO.

Have you ever been to Munich? How many days in Oktoberfest? I recommend a good 3 days at Oktoberfest: one to show up early when it opens, one at night and close it down, and one to enjoy the entire grounds. You can do the first and last together.

Munich is a Great city especially for young people. Most people do too much imo in trying to fit in Oktoberfest and Munich. Maybe go to Neuschwanstein? That’s the obvious day trip.

I’d do something between Munich and Paris though if you are going to stay the night.

Haven’t been to Cop or Bud so I can’t speak on those. If only 2 days, I would suggest:

Prague - cheap, good food, good mix of nightlife and history. Checks all the boxes. And fun all around.

Amsterdam - party, party, party...can get expensive depending on your tastes

Barcelona - favorite city of the 3. Best food of the bunch and the women are spectacular. Beach is amazing. But I went in June so not sure of the weather in Oct. Stay at the Ritz if you have the means

I would think Prague is the easiest to travel to if Munich is entry point. And I would go there. Hit up Barcelona your next Europe trip and make Lisbon your entry point. That’s another trip in itself

Hard to give accurate advice without knowing budget, interests, relationship status and drug use

You could do Salzburg, Innsbruck, Zurich on the way to Paris. You may lose a lot of time traveling to a few of those places.

Berchtesgaden is not far, and very close to Salzburg.

Berchtesgaden includes Das Kehlsteinhaus (Hitler's Eagle's Nest)

Thanks for the recommendations so far everyone. Never been to Munich or Germany in general. We get into Munich Monday afternoon and probably plan on leaving Thursday evening for either Amsterdam or Prague now. We plan on flying to Amsterdam if we do. We fly out of Paris the following Monday so we will likely return to Paris on the Sunday before. We are on this trip to party hard and meet/party with the local womenz. One of my buddies is running the Berlin marathon and a few of us are meeting in Munich after that. We have the Oktoberfest tent tickets too which I heard if you don’t its like tailgating outside of the stadium while the big game is going on.

I'm not positive this is an option, but you may look into a night train. Catch the train at like 10am and wake up at 7am pulling into Amsterdam. Something like that. You go city center to city center, so very little time is wasted.

They kick you out of the tents and stop selling booze at 10, german time sharp. Often earlier then 10. If you want to see the city also, honestly its best to just go home. But otherwise you'll want to plan somewhere else preferably close to where you are staying. They have big after parties because it closes early, but again your next day would be wrecked.

So what time should we try and arrive at the tents? I assume we are going to be pretty much dead at 10pm but if there are after parties or people go to the bars, that would be good to know. I’m assuming you’ve done it before so what would you recommend?

Sort of already answered it previously I see.

Most of the tents either do all day or half day table reservations. The locals reserve a table for usually a half day and go for lunch or dinner plus however many hours. All day would be hardcore.

What I recommend is going to do something first thing in the morning in the city, then going around 11 for lunch. Have 2 liters or so and lunch for a couple of hours. Then go do something else touristy around the city, take a nap, etc. Then head back and have dinner or go back for a liter or 2 after dinner. That way you never get overly hammered and ruin your next day by oversleeping or being hungover.

Food at the fest is very good. I highly recommend getting the Ox knuckle and rotisserie duck, rotisserie chicken is fantastic too. Most tents have a specialty food, you can't get all the food everywhere.

People are standing on tables, challenging each other to pound a liter, etc. all day long even on Mondays. So don't worry about going too early. The nice thing about going early is is not overly crowded and you can get a great seat. You have to have a seat to get a beer.

The biggest thing is don't be shy about finding a seat. If its a non reserved table with a chair or 2 open just sit down. People are usually nice but don't worry. There's plenty from all over the world and not everyone is German or speaks English. Also, ask the waitresses if they have any seats. Especially the waitresses up in the balconies because they are all non reserved.

The easiest way to find the non reserved tables is the dumbass foreigners in their tourist hats and shirts. The locals all wear their bavarian outfit. So if someone has on a tourist type of shirt or hat the table is likely open seating.

im 28 so maybe I can help.

A few months ago I did the following

Prague - good beer scene, good nightlife, good prices.

Amsterdam is crazy nightlife and really crazy everything.

Budapest was a blast. A ton of small little bar joints, amazing prices.

Under the radar - Bratislava. A few strip clubs and a few bars all next to each other, had my favorite night out on my whole trip there.

Vienna was much better than I thought too for nightlife.

can you jump over to London?

Me and my girlfriend will be going as well we get to Munich on Monday and staying until Friday until we head to Switzerland. I was worried about finding a table in a tent but seems like you just have to be aware and be aggressive and jump on it when a table comes open in a tent ha. I will be rocking a lederhosen as well OP! Very much looking forward to this trip!

Thursday through Saturday evenings its like the student section for big SEC football game at night. Shoulder to shoulder madness with drunks everywhere. Lots of dumb fights, etc. Everyone is there, local celebrities and what not. They won't let you inside the tents unless you have a reservation or its one in one out.

Get there before noon Mon-Wed and you can easily get a table inside and the outside tables have very few people. Night time you have to hustle to find a table inside and the outside is busy with some tents full but you can find spots. If you get there at say 3-4 you can probably find a good spot inside if you work at it and be patient. Walk around and enjoy the boobs err I mean people watching. Go to the less popular tents.

We usually work hard to find a really good spot first, stay there for 2 beers. Then walk around and have a 3rd beer somewhere else. Or grab a beer outside early and fast to get some liquid courage to find a good spot inside somewhere.

ETA: I prob like it too much. I went there on my honeymoon and then returned for our 5 year anniversary. Did other quieter things on the trip certainly.

Benches. They rip you down and kick you out if you stand on the table top.

UnluckyTiger, when you say tent tickets, do you mean table reservations in a designated tent?

Also of note, each tent is designed different, serves a different brewery’s beer, and has its own vibe. Don’t be afraid to leave and try a new one (2pm-5 tend to be dead)

Also, before 5/6pm, the music in almost all the tents are old school German Oompah. After that it’s the big wild cover bands.

If you have tent reservations it should tell you either lunch or evening. Lunch start at 10:30 I believe and evening is 4:30. We went right at 4:30 for our evening reservations and walked right in and sat down

Bring euros they don't take credit cards. When you get your first beer give her a good tip. She will take care of you for the rest of your time there

I was stationed in Stuttgart while in the Air Force. It’s a really nice city to visit and not that far from Munchen.

Flying out Sunday, doing Munich for a few days then off to Prague for a couple days and then close out the trip in Paris. Any additional tips for Munich/Prague? Paris will be more sight seeing and winding down from Munich/Prague

Munich: Eat schweinhaxe. It's a skin-on roasted pork shank...think crisp crackling covering melting-tender pork, with a big gnarly bone poking out.

Go to Copenhagen. Get stoned with your bros in Freetown Christiania, look at some badass beer money art at the Glyptotek. See the Art Museum. Take a cabal boat ride. Have a badass steak at MASH. Go to Tivoli if it’s open. 2 days if tight, but you can see a lot.
