Official: EU to Introduce New Individual-Based Travel Restrictions From February 1

quote:
Starting from February 1, the European Union Member States are advised to remove the current restrictions, which are based on the COVID-19 situation on the traveller’s country of departure and replace them with restrictions based on the traveller’s situation.
quote:
On Tuesday, January 25, the EU Council has adopted a new recommendation in another bid to facilitate safe free movement, which guides the Member States to take into account the status of the traveller, instead of his/her country of departure, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
“This means that a traveller’s COVID-19 vaccination, test or recovery status, as evidenced by a valid EU digital COVID certificate, should be the key determinant. A person-based approach will substantially simplify the applicable rules and will provide additional clarity and predictability to travellers,” the Council notes in a press release announcing the recommendation.
quote:
The recommendation becomes effective next Tuesday, on February 1, on the same day when the Member States shorten the validity of vaccination certificates to 270 days at most, while some of the members are set to make them even shorter.
quote:
According to today’s decision of the Council, all restrictions to free movement should be lifted for travellers holding an EU digital COVID certificate that proves the same has been vaccinated with at least two COVID-19 vaccines in the last 270 days, a certificate of recovery from COVID-19 issued in the last 180 days, or a negative result of a test taken in the last 72 hours if it is PCR or the last 24 hours if it is a rapid antigen test.
Those who do not hold an EU Digital COVID certificate will have to test for COVID-19 24 hours before or after arrival. Exempt are children under the age of 12, as well as those with an essential function or need, and cross-border commuters.

While, according to her, it is up to the Member States to apply the recommendation based on their COVID-19 situation, they must discontinue the additional travel measures that have made travel more cumbersome and less predictable across the bloc in the recent weeks due to the spread of the Omicron variant.
In spite of the individual-based approach, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) will continue to weekly update the maps indicating the risk of infections, according to each country’s 14-day vaccine uptake, testing rate, and notification rate.

Good. My greatest worry about my May trip has been the 3 days in Amsterdam as they seem the most covid crazed. Should be able to show my proof of vaccine and go about my business.

You have an EU digital certificate?

It is possible to get one, though the US isn't on the list of 33 recognized countries at this time.

The EU can also decide to automatically recognise certificates issued by other countries. Currently this is the case for 33 countries and territories. The list of these countries can be found in the section Non-EU countries (and territories) that have joined the EU Digital COVID Certificate system on this page. The COVID Certificates issued in these countries are accepted in the EU under the same conditions as the EU Digital COVID Certificate.
Lastly, an EU Member State may, upon request, issue an EU Digital COVID Certificate to a non-EU national wishing to travel to the EU, provided that all reliable proof of vaccination, has been presented, but it is not obliged to do so.

You have to go to a pharmacy once in country and have them scan your vaccine card and get you a digital certificate.
SOME of them will do it...some will not because technically I don't think they are supposed to.
I was able to get one in Germany.

I sure would like to have one.

Likewise, hopefully the US is added to the list but it seems there are some EU countries that are more willing to give them out.

By the time May and the summer role around things will be completely open again

God I hope so. Keeping an eye on this new, as of Feb 1 iirc, rule that you must have completed vax within 270 days of arrival otherwise deemed un vaxxed. Just absolute insanity.

I think that guidance is well thought out and should help ease some of the restrictions.
RE: Digital Certificate
I'm not sure how a US Citizen gets one in the US. If anyone has some actually success in doing so, let us know. In fact, not sure how realistic it is to assume you can get one while in Europe either. My understanding is a pharmacy or a physician would have to agree to enter you into the system to process that, and they just do that for the fun of it.
We got ours through the tour company (See attached. As part of our Viking Cruise). The Cruise Director called in some favors with a local pharmacy he knew and got us the cards within a day. Had to give my Passport and Vax Card to them to get it.
Frankly, it helped some in Germany, which was the most restrictive country we visited in December. The Czech Republic and Poland would look at them, but our paper Vax Card was equally usable. And frankly, I feel like some countries, and in rural areas, barely gave a shite.

So you just need a negative test?
And you upload it like they make you do in HI?

I have some doctor friends in Germany, I may go that route if the US isn't added to the list of acceptable countries.

Two in the last 270 days?? Most has been double vac initially which was over a year ago. Booster within 6 month should be ok.
US residents do not have green/super green pass. The CDC card is accepted.
-- Looks like update is only for EU citizens/countries

So what does this mean exactly? Its good news right because you wont need a negative test to enter/leave if youre vaxxed?
Posted on 1/27/22 at 1:29 pm to LSUregit
Hopefully they drop this booster requirement nonsense. The WHO isn't on board with it and for travelers, it may cause people to not get boosted when it may be useful, delaying a boost to meet a travel requirement.
Perhaps if we get to an annual shot this requirement would work but it certainly would stick out as the only required vaccination outside of some countries that require yellow fever that I'm aware of.

I'm heading to London then Paris in a month.
I'm fully vaxxed and boosted. Booster is only on my digital La. Wallet.
I'm more confused than ever.
