Nice city. Downtown looks a bit like New Orleans, but cleaner, less preservation of historical character, without the balconies and wrought iron.

People are mostly friendly, but are a little less outgoing and not as warm as other southern areas.

Food is average to sub-par, but I might have a high standard. There is just not as much attention to detail. Top restaurants here are just mediocre at best and would not survive in Louisiana.

The beach at Isle of Palm is packed with people, and the properties are relatively swank, but the beach itself looks like Biloxi beach. Water is brownish, sand is sandy light brown clay.

Lots of decent looking women, with lots of tattoos, but I guess that's everywhere now.

I took the Ft. Sumter tour. It was good and I would recommend it.

I wore an LSU shirt downtown, and only ran into one person from LA. I got a few razzies from some Bama and South Cackalacky fans, but mostly people didn't mention it. That's a bit different than in other SEC states where comments are more plentiful.

That's all for now. Any suggestions for activities?

An activity I would suggest is including lots of photos in your post so I can include it within the journal sticky up top.

You needed to research the food better. There are some fine restaurants there, but you likely can't get in on short notice.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I thought they do a fantastic job of maintaining historical areas. Several of the home tours described there was a commission that must approve home changes and colors, etc. Sounded like a militant outfit for preservation. Different architectural influence than New Orleans.

I enjoyed some of the plantation tours and home tours. Carriage rides can be really good if you get a good guide. Learn a lot about history that you can't get by walking around.

I enjoyed touring the aircraft carrier. Take the water taxi it's cheap and you can use it all day. I've seen dolphins every time.

Seems much more refined than New Orleans without the Bourbon atmosphere.

I thought they have a strong food scene for the size of a the city. Not on a NOLA level. I liked Eli's Table, Queen, Husk

Love the area as you can do city and beach stuff being only 15 minutes apart.

Summer does get swampy. Great long weekend city.

New Orleans homer for 26 years now living in Charleston.

Agree on a couple points like less outgoing/less friendly residents compared to most southern areas and not many LSU/Louisiana people fans.

The food comment is just flat out wrong - the food scene here is incredible especially when you consider how new it is compared to New Orleans and the sizes of the city.

The women... you apparently didn't go to the right places. Hit up upper King St on a Friday or Saturday night and it is unbelievable.

The beach - it's the ocean what do you expect? You're not going to get white sand of the eastern Gulf or Destin but it's still very serviceable for being 10-15 minutes away from most of the population in the city with multiple options for beach choices (Folly, Sullivans, IOP, and Kiawah all within 30-45 mins of most of the metro area).

In short, it's definitely not a bad place to be and more a good long weekend place. I've had people visit me in non-beach season and started running out of things to do after 3-4 days since the place is small. I prefer New Orleans overall (it's home) but the outdoor scenery here wins every day.

If you're into Firely sweet tea whiskey, the distillery is about 30 minutes away. Otherwise take a kayak tour of a marsh or the harbor.
