MSY to Pula, Croatia Flight Help
Posted on 2/2/17 at 8:47 pm

I'm wanting to book flight from MSY to Pula, Croatia and a returning flight from Dubrovnik, Croatia to MSY in August. Does anyone have any tips for finding cheap flights? This will be first time ever booking something international like this, so I'm a bit of a rookie on where to look.

Did you attempt to look? If so where?

Pula is quite small--but appears to be a popular destination from the UK. So you might try searching for flights from the UK to Pula, and then book your ticket from MSY to the specific UK airport.
Or look for a flight into Trieste--it's about 2 hrs via train from Pula to Trieste.

Primarily only on Google Flights so far, I plan to really dig into searching this weekend though.

It's about $1300 roundtrip from Nola- PUY in August (just browsing on google flights) on Jetblue and Aer Lingus, or $1485 on Delta.
Actually whoever suggested flying into Trieste had a good idea, it's about $724 on Delta roundtrip (not bad for summer travel to europe) if you go near the end of August, $865 in the middle of August.

Trieste does look like a great option, but I have not been able to find an option of traveling from Trieste to Pula by train...only bus and ferry. How are the buses over there, decent?
Also, what kind of layover times should I be looking at for international fights? I want to make sure I don't book anything too aggressive that will cause me to miss a connecting flight

Re: connection times on intl flights, depends greatly on the airport. Someplace small like Detroit, an hour is fine. The bigger the airport, the more time you'll need to get where you need to go. Main thing to make intl travel easier on you: don't check a bag. Use a rolling carry on plus a backpack or other bag that will fit under the seat in front of you. No worries on lost luggage, no time wasted waiting for bags then clearing customs with the herd of ppl who just got off of your plane.

Here's a sample itinerary from MSY-Trieste $724. On the way there 1 hr 24 min seems good enough for flying through atlanta (I usually say the minimum is 1 hr for domestic connections on international itineraries). The flight on the way back is at 7am out of trieste so not sure if you'd have to spend one night there before departing.

Pula is tough to get to through FRA or LHR, you lose a day waiting on the NS.
The best alternative is what you did through Rome.
PS: Unrelated but good news- The Condor NS flights in May & June on MSY-FRA are at $619 pp.

Rijeka is another option. It's closer than Trieste and you avoid border crossings. I believe Ryanair and eurowings serve Rijeka, so may find options through London or Frankfurt.
Sretan put.

You could fly into Venice and take the fast ferry to Pula, but I'm not that impressed by Pula anyway and would take the same ferry line to Rovnj which is a smaller, nicer Istrian city.
If you have united or chase points, there is generally good availability for flights from MSY to Venice, Rome, Split, Zagrebto make something work.

Per Google flights, I had found a great round trip flight:
MSY - TRS on August 23
DBV - MSY on September 3
Total flight cost for 2 people per google: $2,200
In order to book, it said I needed to call Air France. I just got off the phone with Air France, and they are saying the same itinerary is $2,100 per person.
Is Google Flights typically that far off? What am I doing wrong here?

I have had that happen a couple times when it says to call. The agent on the phone will give a line about google not having their most current rates.

Try american express travel. Sometimes google flights has trouble pulling up the tickets but the travel sites can book fine.

Cuse, you know anything about Condor Airlines? I'm seeing $1,300 total for both of us round trip msy to Zagreb on Condor which is real hard to pass up.

The biggest thing with those low cost is how many trips they do in and out of that airport. If your plane has issues or your crew has issues, and that's their only flight of the day you are likely stuck. I don't have any experience with condor, just low cost in general.

Condor is basically a Frontier/Spirit Airlines for international travel. The seat pitch on their 767s (would be your MSY-Frankfurt flight) only has a 30" seat pitch, you get one 23 kg checked bag and a 6kg backpack. As baldona also mentioned, they don't have many planes so if there's a delay it will likely be one or two days before you can actually get to zagreb.
Is $1300 and driving 3 hours each way once in croatia worth it or would you rather do the multicity ticket for $2200 without worrying about driving or using a low-cost airline?

Check venice, spend a day or two and take the ferry over, it's about a 3 hr ride.

My thoughts were to book a one way flight from Dubrovnik to Zagreb at the end of our trip, then hop back on the round trip. It's only about $200 for both of us to book this one way flight which still seems much cheaper than the Delta/Air France option. How much difference is the seat pitch on Air France vs Delta? I have zero experience with International flights.

I'm finding $693 roundtrip to Trieste for your dates on Delta/Alitalia ($1386 for you and the mrs). If you're not really going to save that much money by flying into zagreb then the hassle may not be worth it. I'm off today so I can help you book anything if you're trying to settle on something
